I wanted nothing to do with the contract that he got. Losing respect for the guy because he signed with someone else is stupid. Especially when he signed a contract to where his grandkids would never have to work if he is smart.

I don't think it's stupid and as it has turned out the grandkids aren't getting as much as they might have otherwise... In hindsight, it really was no loss on his part because the Cubs didn't win the WS in '07-09 but they were generally a hell of a lot closer than the Royals.

Also, my point wasn't that I expected the Cubs to match the Royals offer I just don't understand taking more money to play for a team without a realistic shot at the playoffs (and by extension the World Series). It makes me believe that he was more comfortable pitching in obscurity; in which case I'm glad he signed with them because the pressure to perform in Chicago would have been immense.

I'm willing to trade them Garza for Hosmer, Moustakas and Montgomery. :D

They can't afford Garza. Their owner is keeping $12M all to himself.

If they throw in Wil Myers and John Lamb, too, I'll pay the $6M salary.

You weren't very high on the Royals system earlier this year, glad to see you turned the corner.

This has to be a joke.

Can you name me a player who retired (whether he just quit or because of injuries) while still on his contract and not get paid at all whatsoever?? Cuz I can't think of one. If you can and it's legit, I'll shut up and eat my words on it. I'm just thinking cuz the player's union is going to back up the players, they're just not gonna let the owner have that money to himself even if Meche doesn't want the money. I mean I'm even trying to think of a player (who quit/retired due to injury) during a season and not get paid after he was done cuz they still pay him for the rest of the year. That's a little different, but still kinda the same (they didn't pay the player a prorated portion of the salary cuz he retired/quit partway through the season cuz the contract was voided the day he retired).

I mean this can't be the first time someone ever done what Meche is doing now right??? Maybe I should just shut up cuz I don't understand or something... Maybe there is a clause in the contract where the contract is voided if you retire on your own term. I don't have that much knowledge about the contract and retirement so I'm just wondering and trying to figure it out.

So you think that if you have a contract and decide you don't want to show up for work anymore that your employer still has to pay you? Really?

so he basically just gave the Royals 12 million by retiring?

yes, although he probably didn't feel like dealing with the pain and rehab that it would take to get back to pitching in the major leagues.

that being said, almost everyone in the major leagues and probably on planet earth would take $12 million to do that, so more power to him.

Yeah more power to him, but he should've at least tried and get that $12 million then flip it back to the community or charities or something.... instead of giving it back to the owners? Still, either way, it's not something you see everyday and bravo to Meche...

Also... I wonder how the MLBPA gonna take this? I doubt that they'll let this go and let Meche give $12 million back, even if he does retire. When the last time they let a player give money back to the organization???

They should just have some guy that looks a little like Gil show up at ST like nothings wrong.

sounds like the Royals were planning on buying him out for 6 mil or so but he wouldn't take any $$ from them

that wont make the MLBPA happy, but he doesnt need them for anything so too bad.

The MLBPA shouldn't care about that. It doesn't set any sort of precedent that could impact other players in the future.

Yeah, I think there are guys there that are a bit overrated right now, but it is a very solid system. It got a huge boost from the jumps in performance in 2010 from guys like Hosmer and Moose.

Which guys do you think are overrated? If I had to guess which one I would say the most overrated is I would go with Moose. I know he had nice numbers, but most of them came in the hitters heaven that was NW Ark and he still won't take a walk.

Don't exactly want to hijack the thread here, but I got a couple questions though (this is for anybody on here to answer)... I just moved to Fayetteville, AR 2 weeks ago for Architecture school. Royals AA team/stadium is not even 10 minutes away from where I live now. I'm thinking about getting either a 7-game or 11-game package (along with other single game tixs if I have the time). My questions are... (you guys can PM me or say it here)

Who are the prospects that I should watch out for? (Royals AA and the rest of the Texas league) Will Mike Trout be with the Angels AA team this season?

What is Arvest Ballpark like? (like the stadium itself, any great/bad spots to watch, hitters/pitchers park?,etc...)

What other Texas League team do I need to see?

If there's anything else, or something you would recommend, just go ahead and add to it... I'm just curious cuz I used to go watch the Indianapolis Indians a few times a year the past couple years and love to watch the minor leagues games. I'm not really knowledgeable on the minor leagues/prospects/etc... (I mainly know the Cubs farm system and like other big time prospects like Hellickson/Montero/Harper/etc...) I'm pretty excited to see the Naturals as they should have a few of their big prospects playing there this year. Thanks.

I've only went to one series and it was last year, but I loved the ballpark. As for at AA I would assume that Wil Myers will be there as he finished the year very strongly last year at high A, but I guess they could repeat him. It's also possible that Christian Colon will be there at some point next year.

I'm suspicious of the guys who took the big performance jump in 2010 until I see them do it again.

Your principal should fire you for not knowing the difference between principal and principle. :D

An overlooked portion of this story is that Meche has been hurt since some time in 2009 and refused surgery. He looks good for giving up this money, but he'd look just as bad if he took the salary to fake a bullpen attempt because he doesn't want shoulder surgery.

You should come down to the Rock and catch the Travelers sometime, too. :)
