What teams are going to need a 1B next year and can pony up the money?

I still think there is a .0000001 % chance he plays for any team but the Cards

I made a decision to never get excited until a player is at a press conference holding up my team's jersey.

It's fun to speculate though.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I just think Pujols has enough respect for the Cardinals organization to run to their most hated rival. Especially if the money and years are similar to what is being offerend elsewhere. If that's not the case, then all bets are off.

I just can't imagine that these franchises and the people running them care nearly as much about these "rivalries" as their redneck fans do.

You're probably right, but in some cases, the decision makers HAVE to care because their redneck fans do. See: Brewers and White Sox

I truly don't think Pujols wants to leave St.Louis. But, I also think that he probably believes he's given them a huge discount over the course of this past contract and wants to be paid as if he was on the open market this time around. I certainly see his point and I honestly can't see how the Cards wouldn't see that too.

I could see him banking on the Cubs rumors' playing on the Cards' emotions and actually getting them to move much closer to whatever his magic number is.

And while this thing supposedly has a deadline of Wednesday(pushed back for something honoring Musial tomorrow) I don't think for a second that this thing won't continue to get worked on. It's too important for the Cards to just drop it when the "deadline" expires.

My understanding is it's Pujols who set the deadline, not the Cardinals.

Yeah, he's said he doesn't want to talk about it at all in-season.

My take is that he's doing what most other players would do, and that's make sure he sees free agency unless the home town team wants to make his dreams come true. But since that means turning down the Cardinals initially, the fans are holding up his "I'd like to finish my career here" quotes as proof that he's somehow Greedy McGreederson. I'd say right now it's about 50% chance he stays with STL, and it drops below 50% if this deadline passes with no progress.

Yeah, I think it was Pujols that put the deadline on it too. But, I think that's just a bargaining chip as well, in the grand scheme of things. Which is why I think that if the Cards come up to him midway through ST and say we're going to up our offer in both years and money, he'd listen. But, I am taking this point of view being under the impression that he loves St.Louis and WANTS to play there for his entire career. And that could easily be a mistake on my part for thinking that.

As for his possibility of joining the Cubs, if he DOES leave the Cards? I hate to say it, but I think we'd have to be one of the favorites and I certainly don't think that Pujols would have an issue playing for us either.

If he leaves the Cards, the bridge is burned. There would be hard feelings on BOTH sides as soon as it's known he's not going to play there. And I think his criteria would then shift to money and what kind of team are you going to put around him? If the Cubs are the most impressive to him, when it comes time to do that, I think he'd be a Cub and not allow stuff in his past to play into his decision.

Not entirely sure, but at least the Red Sox and Yankees are accounted for with huge money long term deals on younger players.

Unless their money was quite a bit more than everyone else's I don't think he'd want to DH for anyone. That said, I'd think the Yankees would probably approach Teixeira about moving to DH and if he refused, then maybe ask him if he'd waive his NTC and see what his response would be.

Jayson Stark and Colin Cowherd were both speculating that the Cubs are the most likely destination. I still don't believe it's even a possibility.

link? was it on tv or radio somewhere?

oh and BUT ESPN WANTS EVERYONE TO GO TO THE YANKEES OR RED SOX

No link. It was on live radio. They were just speculating. Cowherd said he thought the cubs were most likely. Stark agreed but said there would be a lot of teams interested. They didn't have any more info than is out there already.

The early front runner is never the winner. Did the Yankees get Cliff Lee? Did the Knicks get LeBron? Did the Cubs get Peavy?

I'd rather be the sneaky underrated team that swoops in and steals him.

Then I guess we can feel confident that he won't be a Cardinal

Like the Bears with Cutler.

Cardinals, Pujols extend contract deadline

The St. Louis Cardinals and representatives for Albert Pujols(notes) have agreed to a 24-hour extension to reach a new contract out of respect for Stan Musial.

The Cardinals Hall of Famer will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in Washington on Tuesday and general manager John Mozeliak said Monday the club did not want to distract from Musial’s special day. Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. and Mozeliak will accompany the 90-year-old Musial to Washington.

Pujols’ agent, Dan Lozano, originally set a Tuesday deadline, the first workout day for pitchers and catchers in Jupiter, Fla. Mozeliak said the new deadline is noon (EST) Wednesday.

24 hour extensions is the first sign this thing is going to get done.

Next step, is after 24 hour's, Albert will listen to offers into spring training.

Mozeliak said that the way he understood it, they need a term sheet signed by the deadline. The rest of the contract language and all that stuff could be finished later.

i think the cardinals would technically still be the front runner.

This is hardly an extension. According to Pujols, he didn't want this go on beyond when he reported to camp. Originally, that was scheduled to be the 19th. Then it was reported that he would arrive early on the 16th and that that was the deadline even though he wasn't required to report until the 19th. Then he made it when pitchers and catchers reported on the 15th and it got moved back to noon on the 16th. Noon.

This is hardly an extension.

Is this like when the Brian Roberts deal was being help up out of respect for Goose Gossage getting into the HOF?

Wow, I'd forgotten all about that.

The question isn't who's going to need a 1B, the question is who is going to want the best hitter in baseball?

The list of interested teams will be long. The money may be considered too much by some, but logic suggests (and some reprots, too) that even teams like the Royals would be willing to pony up the money. He's worth a lot.
