Well this would certainly make me a little sadder for our future prospects at 1B... Per Rotoworld:

ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes reports that Red Sox GM Theo Epstein is "making headway" in a deal for Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

The Red Sox have been linked to Gonzalez for seemingly forever, and once they lost Victor Martinez, we assumed they would step up their efforts to land the Padres star. Gonzalez will be a free agent after the 2011 season, and the Padres have conceded that they have no shot to retain him, so a deal was inevitable, and it sounds like one could be consummated soon. Stay tuned. Dec. 3 - 5:46 pm et

I dont blame Hendry in the slightest for the White Sox signing Dunn, but if the Red Sox got A Gon for a package we could have matched, I want to urinate on him.

I agree, not sure about urinating on him but I cannot see how the Cubs do not have the pieces to make a trade. I know ideally you would like to sign him and not give up anything but he is the guy I think the Cubs need to snag some how.

Problem is that the Red Sox being the Red Sox, they likely have every intention of locking him in for the next 6-8 years. 2012 Prince Fielder just got a lot more expensive.

And if this happens it's why you don't look forward one year to free agency if you're a team like the Cubs. You sign good players, even if they aren't as good as the future FA, if you can.

My problem with this info, is also realizing that the entire Padre front office are former Red Sox employees, therefore being very familiar with their system already and probably having a great relationship with Theo. :banghead:

Unfortunately, Hendry's hands have to be completely tied right now. No money to spend and with Ricketts stressing the development of the farm, there is no way he'll let Jim pay the price for Adrian.

Gonzo does not make that much, they can afford him and with all of the money coming off of the books after this season, they can afford a long term extension with him.

Sources: #Cubs also pursuing A. Gonzalez. Multiple teams besides #RedSox involved.

Good to hear they are still in it.

Yay. The question is why would SD trade him now given they almost made the playoffs last year? I would assume they would wait until July at the earliest

Huh? July would be their absolute last chance to trade him.

In the offseason it's a lot easier to deal him contingent on an extension with the new team, raising the return by a ton.

All the stuff I've read about the Cubs getting into the race for Agonz make it sound like we just couldn't compete with a Red Sox package. I feel like that's a little outlandish no?

Wouldn't on the other hand, possibly increase the return value in June/July by the trade deadline though than in the off-season? Assuming one team is desperate enough, that is.

I believe it's mentioned in the article on SI.com, that the Padres know that Arz, LA, and Colorado are all improving themselves ... and then you have the reigning champs in the Giants. The Pads might realize they don't have much of a shot in the division for 2011, and their best bet for a good haul is this winter.

didn't A-Gone have shoulder surgery at the end of this year? Maybe thats why they would like to sell high? Or maybe just the prospects being offered are more to their liking. Either way any team should be concerned about this:

Per Rotoworld:

Adrian Gonzalez-1B - Padres Nov. 9 - 9:54 pm et

Adrian Gonzalez (shoulder) told XX Sports Radio in San Diego on Tuesday that he will not swing a bat for 4-5 months.

As Dan Hayes of the North County Times points out, Gonzalez underwent right shoulder surgery on October 20, so this may put him on pace to be ready around March 20. The 2011 season gets underway on March 31, so he could be cutting things close. We'll know a lot more in the weeks and months ahead, so be sure to stay tuned for updates on his recovery.

Yeah but how do you justify that with your already fickle fans?

I'm sure we could compete, but the question is would we be willing to compete. Guys like Castro and Brett Jackson are probably off limits, so we'd have to build the package around some combo of Vitters, JJax, Cashner, Archer, HJ Lee, etc.

I don't know if that'd be enough to compete with a Boston offer, but I'm sure we could if we were willing to give up Castro or BJax.
