rick rypien sucker punches brad staubitz and then goes after a fan (as the homer canucks commentator pretends that the fan reached over first)

Will be interesting to see that suspension. Is 20 games too much?

yes

That fan didn't touch him. Didn't make any gesture toward him. I grant you, he didn't punch the fan. Looked like he just grabbed him and shook him for a minute.

But still, it's another animal when you attack a fan.

you asked if 20 games was too much and the easy answer to that is yes. Will the NHL suspend him for 20+ games, who knows? They sometimes way overreact to certain things because of public reaction, and sometimes they almost seem to go against public pressure.

I think 5 games would suffice. I think the Vancouver announcers should be suspended a couple of games for being overly dumbass homers :)

Canuck announcers were worse than Rypien.

What the hell are they looking at?

no kidding...the really funny thing is that the Canucks will probably be a better team without Rypien playing, but those frickin homers probably think they need his goonery to protect the Sedins.

hat trick for stamkos tonight. that's 8 goals in 7 games after 51 last year. he's also leading the league in points (14)

still 20 years old. (and doesn't turn 21 until next february)

also the lightning are 5-1-1. is there anything yzerman doesn't excel at?

Blues win again tonight, I thought they would make the playoffs after adding Halak but I did not think they would be as good as they have looked so far.

they impressed me against the flyers... not so much offensively but they really kept us from getting many decent scoring chances.

In a move that would serve to kneecap the ambitions of Comcast-NBC Universal, ESPN is poised to take a run at the rights for the National Hockey League.

I gotta say...I don't like ESPN, but I'm hoping they win the rights, just because of the programming tier that Dish has put Versus on...

I think the downside of this would be at playoff time. Versus covers two games a night most nights in the playoffs. I am not sure that ESPN would give that level of coverage with all their other commitments.

LOL ESPN basically left the NHL for dead several years back, losing broadcasting rights while dropping NHL coverage to nothing more than a 3 minute segment on Sportscenter. I don't even think they sent guys on location for big events like the Stanley Cup Finals (could be wrong though).

Anyways, the NHL has a tiny bit of momentum now so it's nice to see ESPN wants back. It will be interesting to see if/when their hockey coverage explodes if they acquire the rights.

I dont fault ESPN for dumping the NHL.

I don't either. It's just funny they want back in now.

I am glad they do. I hope Versus keeps them, but competition will probably force Versus to make improvements on their overall coverage.

claude giroux signed a 3 year, $11.25m contract extension with the flyers. the dollar value pretty much assumes that he's more like the player in the playoffs and the first few weeks of this season than the player he was for much of last season (solid but not really good). anyway, it seems like a reasonable deal to me, and he'll still be an RFA at the end of this contract, which is good.

More on what Bukie said above...

The conference vs. conference format will be replaced by a player draft, conducted by the All-Star players themselves, to determine the 2011 NHL All-Star Game and SuperSkills competition. Fans will still select the top six All-Stars by position and the remaining 36 All-Stars will be selected by NHL Hockey Operations Department. Then it gets interesting as two captains will draft players for their teams.
