Darryl Sutter stepped down Tuesday as general manager of the Calgary Flames, who are next to last in the Western Conference with a 16-18-3 record.

 

Jay Feaster was named acting general manager, the team announced.

 

"Darryl has performed valuable service to the Calgary Flames organization for 8 years," team president Ken King said in a statement. "We thank Darryl for his leadership and his important contributions to re-establishing the Calgary Flames as a model franchise."

 

Also, the winter classic could be a bust since it's in the country's rainiest city.

 

Maybe the NHL should try and promote something more than just Sidney Crosby every chance they get.

Holmstrom out for at least a month and Howard also went out of the game last night. This to go with Datsyuk, Cleary, and Modano already being out. The Wings are starting to look like last years version, except they are still somehow getting most of these games to OT and at least getting a point.

flyers had kind of a line brawl against the rangers today. brandon prust was going to fight matt walker when walker was inexplicably drilled from behind by some other guy. walker ended up fighting some other guy, prust was matched up with darroll powe, who isn't a fighter. prust threw a couple of punches but mostly he realized the guy he was matched up against was not a fighter, and took it easy. sean avery, on the other hand, sought out matt carle (absoluteoly not a fighter) and fought him, continuing to throw punches after carle went down on the ice. just goes to show one guy who understands the code of the game (prust) and one clown who does not (avery).

but come on, "code of the game"? that doesn't sound much different than all the tiresome unwritten rules of baseball guys are supposed to follow for whatever reason. specifically all the whining of late about players doing spin-o-ramas in the shootout

the senators' tv announcers (the color analyst is dennis potvin) have a breathtaking mixture of homerism and stupidity. i'm not sure i've ever heard worse analysis of what is going on in a game than their commentary in the third period. they repeatedly accused the flyers of cheap shots and dirty hits - after it was 5-2 giroux laid a big hit on a senator and potvin said that it was the first hit he's ever made (comical) and started a huge brawl (clean hitting no longer okay with a 3 goal lead). in all of the dirty play by the flyers, they ended up with like 3 or 4 PP in the third period while the team that was getting its ass kicked and gooning it up, ottawa, had none.

 

then the play by play guy suggested that the flyers' fighters were avoiding the sens' goons even though our only goon (shelley) fought chris neil and [expletive] giroux and carter dropped the gloves with fighters.

They're more crucial in the ASG than the season, because they're actually picking teams. Just thought it'd be Crosby and Ovechkin.

 

since the ASG is stupid, I would say that the Captains are moot. I understood Lidstrom but didnt understand Staal until I found out the game is in Carolina.

Yeah, at least the NHL's ASG is during the season when everyone is still playing. The NFL ASG is only comprised of players who have been off for a month.

going into last nights game the NJ Devils had won 4 straight and were still had the lowest point total in the NHL. It is amazing how bad that they are considering their talent level.

fun with goal differential:

 

-tampa is 3rd in the nhl in points and their goal differential is even (lousy defense/goaltending)

-los angeles has the best differential in the pacific division, and is in last place (11th in the conference). the team with the worst differential, anaheim, is in 2nd place and 5th in the conference.

-florida has a differential of +52 on ottawa, and just 7 more points.

 

other fun:

-colorado is 4th in the league in goals scored, and has a negative differential.

-three teams are undefeated in shootouts - los angeles (5-0), buffalo (4-0) and colorado (3-0).

-two teams have not won a shootout - ottawa (0-3) and minnesota (0-4). edmonton has been particularly bad as well (1-7).

-the western conference is 102-58-27 against the east. the east is 85-74-28 against the west. columbus (15-19-4) and st louis (14-18-5) have been lousy against the west and great against the east (8-2-1 and 8-2-2, respectively). edmonton is 6-4-1 against the east and 9-22-7 against the west.
