I don't know the rule either. That puck came to a complete stop though, on the spin. It was only for a split second, but clearly observable on the replay. Whether or not that means it should have been disallowed -- I don't know.

He can do what he wants, but to me it's pretty weird to decline the invitation. Especially on the basis that he "hasn't been on the team for almost a year." It hasn't been very long.

I wonder if this is more about not wanting to rock the boat in Philly, because he has to play with those guys now and they lost....to him, essentially.

It was very close. Appeared to me that he puck did stop though and that goal should have been disallowed.

The bigger shame is that the NHL continues to decide games and valuable points towards playoffs through the equivalent of a game of tiddly winks. Get rid of the shootouts please.

Yeah, I'm to the point where I want to see the ties make a comeback over meaningful games being decided on a skills competition.

They should still make them do the shootout though. Most fans do love it. Here's a thought. Each team gets a point in the standings if still tied after 5:00 of OT. Still do the shootout in its current form, and if the home team wins, all the fans get a coupon for a free taco or something. The NHL could set up a national deal with some fast food chain. If I ruled the NHL...

EDIT: I realize after five seconds of reflecting on this awesome idea that TV viewers then wouldn't give two shits about the shootout. So, you'd have to throw out the rules and let the guys do whatever crazy moves they want. ENTERTAIN US!

Ties were unpopular, which is why they went to this format in the first place.

There's no reason to think people would suddenly warm up to the idea of kissing their sisters, so to speak.

There's not a really good option, so the worst thing that could be done is to start flipping back and forth between the bad ones, IMO.

Still have shootouts, but make OT 10 minutes. 5 minutes is a joke.

I'd bet the PA would have a problem with that. But it is a good idea.

I thought I read earlier in the season where the NHL was experimenting with possibly going 5 min 3 on 3 or even pulling the goalies. At least they're trying.

Here's tonights update as it applies to the Hawks playoff race:

Predators beat the Wild 4-0

Coyotes beat the Flames 3-0

As a result, the Hawks remain technically in 4th place, but it is now a 3 way tie between Phoenix, Calgary and Chicago. The Hawks have 1 game in hand on Phoenix and 2 on Calgary so that's good. Nashville's win also cuts the Hawks playoff cushion to 3 points.

Here's how the standings look after tonight:

4. Chicago 81 68
5. Phoenix 81 69
6. Calgary 81 70
7. Dallas 80 67
8. Los Angeles 79 67
------------------
9. Nashville 78 68
10.Anaheim 77 67
11.Minnesota 77 68

Hawks still have 2 days off before their next game. Here are the games that effect us the next 2 nights:

Friday:

Los Angeles @ Columbus

Minnesota @ Dallas

Anaheim @ Colorado

Saturday:

Colorado @ Nashville

Vancouver @ Calgary

Just for fun, this is how the standings would look if everyone of those games went against the Hawks.

4. Calgary 83 71
5. Dallas 82 68
6. Chicago 81 68
7. Los Angeles 81 68
8. Phoenix 81 69
------------------
9. Nashville 80 69
10.Anaheim 79 68
11.Minnesota 78 69

That's actually not as bad as I thought

hawks aren't aren't really tied with calgary and phoenix. ppg is what's important.

Si. But its like in the NBA if a team is 20-11 and another team is 19-10. They are tied but the 2nd team has 2 games in hand

It's more like in the NBA if a team is 19-12 and another team is 19-10, but they have the same amount of points because the wins are the same.

All 3 teams that we wanted to lose tonight won. This playoff race is really tough. So....Chicago has dropped to 5th and is in a 4 way tie (in terms of points) with 4 teams (seeds 5-8). The Blackhawks playoff cushion is now down to 2 points over Anaheim. Coming into the week we had a 5 point cushion and I think held the 4 seed by 2 points. What a difference 5 days makes.

4. Dallas 82 68
5. Chicago 81 68
6. Los Angeles 81 68
7. Phoenix 81 69
8. Calgary 81 70
---------------------
9. Anaheim 79 68
10.Nashville 78 68
11.Minnesota 77 69

To a large extent, the Hawks control their own destiny. If they go 6-6-2 that would give them 95 points which ought to be enough to get in somewhere. If they can't do that then they don't deserve to make the playoffs. The Hawks seem to play better against good teams so I'm not worried about the schedule.

Well, every team is going to feel that way though.

Another way of looking at it is, the Hawks have put themselves in this situation with endless giveaways in their own zone, poor puck control, and period-long lapses that give games away to mediocre teams.

So that worst case scenario I was talking about on Thursday is almost about to happen. Of the 5 games involving our playoff competition, all of them have gone against the Hawks. The last remaining game still in doubt sees Calgary with a 2-1 lead over Vancouver in the 2nd.

The Hawks are now 1 point from not being in the playoffs.

And they have games in hand on just about everyone (only Dallas has played the same amount).

Yup, but likely the hardest schedule. I definitely think we'll make the playoffs but its not at all going to be easy.
