The reason major league 2 is on my mind....a coworker just emailed me this:

what just happened is just like in major league 2, when they call on ricky vaughn, and everyone is like 'oh [expletive] not that loser, he's gonna blow it', and then you see sheen appear with his trademark jacket and haircut, puts his black framed glasses on and tells the annoying fan to 'blow it out your ass' as Wild thing starts up on the sound system

the badass hawks are back!

There's a Charlie Sheen/Kaner comparison there somewhere too.

Or maybe its like one of those mighty duck movies, where they are all down, and q gets on his walkie talkie and starts inspiring them talking about how Hawks fly together (bold face lie but they're hockey players so whatever), and they all make up stories that end in "hawks fly together!" and then they came out in their badass red jerseys and everyone is like 'oh snap the hawks are back'

did they switch jerseys during intermission?

I'm now mostly curious how UMF can top this in the third period. We've gone from "season over" to "Stanley Cup, here we come!" in the span of 10 minutes. Will there be anything left?

When was the last roller coaster you were on that ended on a peak?

IDK, but if they score four more in the 3rd, I'm calling a minimum eight-peat.

lol I'm not even sure if we'll make the playoffs. I'm just playing off the excitement. The Hawks are a team that is flawed but you get the feeling that there's an extra gear there that we haven't seen. Or at least havent seen enough of.

I know there should have been a penalty called on Blues besides the one on Backes, but how does McDonald getting slashed and Sobotka getting his jersey held not a penalty?

If you are listening to the Blues announcers, you should know they are pretty whiney.

Anyone watching? Good call disallowing this one?

Eddie thought it was questionable, a play more about position than interfering.

Thanks. Well now it's 4-3 anyway. Dammit. Knew this wasn't going to be easy.

I had a meeting so I missed the third but i caught the last 30 seconds, the Blues announcers said the Blackhawks earned the 2 points by constantly putting their body on the line to block shots. I'm not used to hearing the Hawks winning in such gritty ways. When I said the weekend was a failure last night, I forgot about this game. I will take 4 points out of 6. Now tied for 7th place in the conference (also tied for 11th) and only 4 points out of 4th.

Four HUGE points in about 22 hours or so.

5-way tie now for 7th/8th at 68 points. Three of those teams have a game in hand on the Hawks though.

Broken record, but another HUGE game Thursday night in Nashville.

Hawks win!

On an unrelated note, the New Jersey Devils are ON FIRE. Holy crap.

lol Too bad they waited for 2/3rds of the season to pass before showing up. Still 10 points out of the 8th seed.

Indeed. Win this game and, as of right now, they are only 2 points behind the Preds (and 2 out of 2nd in the division).

That first and second period today summed up why this season has been so frustrating. They look god-awful that first period...I think they gave us 9 shots but I couldn't think of a single legitimate opportunity, just a bunch of Bickell-esque 40 foot wristers.

Then they come out for the second, and play like champions. Just enough to show you that the talent is there to completely dominate a team. I've never really believed in the theory that players don't try all the time, but this year's team has really made me question what I think. I guess we'll see though, because time's running out to translate that talent into wins.

Even with the victory, Leddy and Hendry looked awful. I'm not a big fan of the current pairings, simply because I know how effective Seabs/Keith and Campbell/Hammer can be together, but it's becoming increasingly clear that a Leddy/Hendry (or Boynton) pairing would be a total disaster. It'd be really nice to grab another d-man before the deadline, I just don't know if our cap situation is going to allow it.

I don't think they are thinking 'meh, im gonna half ass it in this one because we won the cup last year'. But I think its a possibility that they can't hit that same gear as last year for whatever reason.

Last year was a dream season, and we managed to win the cup with a very very young team. I've said this before but when you are 23-24, a budding NHL star and you go out work your ass off and win the Cup, its like your greatest possible NHL achievement reached at such a young stage of your career, its tough to pick it back up 4 months later with the same intensity. The only thing that keeps teams like that on course is coaching and veteran leadership. The Hawks have a very young team still. There are some veterans but not enough in leadership roles.

I don't think anyone is dogging it or anything. I think you can control 90% of your effort, but the last 10 percent comes from within and comes from the drive to achieve a goal. Sometimes, I think I see a bunch of Hawk players out there that figure they are going to have many more chances to win the cup.

I dunno, I'm probably wrong, and the whole theory is laughable because its something you can't quantify. But one thing I've learned about sports over the last few years is that motivation (and coaching) is what seperates similarly taleted teams (and the deviation in talent for the middle 20 teams in the league is not big). So if I see a team that is not playing like I'd expect them to be, I can't help but think the team is not motivated for whatever reason.

They were. The Blues kept getting great opportunities but someone was stepping in front and blocking shots. Hossa had a couple, Campbell took a big one late, Seabrook had one. I think they had 9-10 in the 3rd, many of them late.

That really was a gutty effort.

If you're talking about TV announcers, I tend to agree, but Pang isn't a whiner. It's mostly Kelly. Anyways, good win for the Blackhawks. Great effort for getting 2 pts. after being down 2 on the road.

So apparently it was Toews that went on a tirade after the first period. [expletive] yeah.

Watching the Blackhawks sleepwalk through the first period of a game they absolutely had to win was too much for Jonathan Toews to stomach.

So the captain let his teammates have it.

"Maybe I got after the boys a little bit too much, but we saw the guys responded to it," Toews said after the Hawks' 5-3 victory Monday over the Blues.

"What's frustrating (is), we say things before the game that we have to do and we go out there and play the way we did in the first 20 minutes. It was unacceptable and the leaders in the locker room held the rest of the team accountable and everyone stepped up to the plate in the second 20 (minutes)."
