Hate to disagree with my old friend Will, but I don't see this scenario happening.

What do you see as most likely, Bruce?

I'd say Quade is the front-runner at this point, but I don't see an imminent announcement.

And you were being sarcastic when you called Carroll a friend right?

No, I like Will. Don't always agree with him, but I've known him for a long time and have gotten on well with him.

Man I don't know if Quade will be good or not, but it will seem like a huge victory just because he's not Sandberg. For the past several months I've thought it was inevitable that it would be Ryne.

Plus Quade looks like a turtle and that makes me smile.

I don't want Ryne anywhere near this team, even if it's only as bench coach. I have terrible visions of us bunting in the 1st inning with our #3 hitter.

Baylor used to do that, but it was with the #2 guy.

But why would a bench coach be calling for bunts/sacs? I don't object to Sandberg as a bench coach at all. In fact, it makes a lot of sense to me. Wouldn't be agreeable to him as manager though.

The only issue I have with Sandberg as a bench coach is that it makes him closer/more qualified to be an MLB manager in the eyes of some. Is there no way to keep Trammel? I'd like him there more than Sandberg.

Fair point. I have nothing against Trammel at all. For some reason I've sort of just been assuming he'll be moving on after what happened after Lou left, but I'm not sure. He's not under contract next year like Larry and Rudy, is he?

Sandberg would be one step away from being manager. That's my problem.

Better than already being the manager.

Plus, there's the slim chance that actually spending a year or two in a 21st century big league dugout will change his mind about bunting every at bat.

Ryno will be our manager at some point. There's simply no avoiding it. I'd rather get it out of the way while we're in a transitional phase.

over/under on how many times Sandberg would get ejected as bench coach?

In 144 games last year with the Iowa Cubs, Sandberg had non-pitchers sac bunt 27 times. That's once every 5.33 games. The majority of those 27 bunts came from Chris Robinson, Matt Camp, James Adduci, and Bobby Scales. Darwin Barney had 2 all year. Ty Wright, Marquez Smith, Sam Fuld, and Welington Castillo each had 1.

Aren't we blowing things out of proportion a little bit?

Yes, but people want to continue to use one example of his managerial career to the fullest. The season stats don't support any of their arguments, but that one example does.

Keep in mind that only successful sacrifice bunts are recorded. That number is low.

In terms of sacrifice bunting, I think it's a complete and total waste of an out when it comes to non-pitchers. I know there's something to be said for teaching prospects how to bunt, but the vast majority of those prospects will not be bunting as a way of collecting infield hits. Moreover, it's especially disconcerting when you take into account the articles Sandberg has written and the quotes he's made about "playing the game the right way." Based on those articles and interviews, as well as his various minor league decisions as manager, Sandberg strikes me as the kind of manager who'd rather have a team of David Ecksteins over a team of Adam Dunns.

I am staunchly against productive outs and unnecessary aggression on the basepaths. We don't need a manager who wants sacrifice bunts, hit and runs, hitting to the right side to move runners over, etc. Our offense is already bad enough. We don't need someone coming in who decides to make it worse because that's how baseball should be played.

Don't get me wrong, I understand people don't like some of the things he says either (which I happen to think are cliches more than anything when he says stuff like "hard work" and "gut feeling"). This judgment is just getting way out of hand IMO. Talk about mountain from a molehill.

Forget for a second that people are jumping to conclusions on his managerial style; I know people here have admitted that the manager has very little weight in the way the season record turns out.

There's one undeniable fact in all of this: Sandberg has a good chance of being the next manager. I guess my point of view is wait and see if he actually does become manager and watch him actually manage before judging him as a manager. I'm not telling anyone how to feel, I just don't understand all the hand wringing on a decision that hasn't even been made about a manager that we honestly know extremely little about.
