Last day of the regular season for the Dominican Summer League. While DSL Cubs 1 won their division with the best record in the league, DSL Cubs 2 had the worst record in the league. I believe DSL Cubs 1 get a bye in the playoffs as a result of their record.

Rhee pitched one third of an inning, giving up 4 hits, 4 runs, all earned and a walk before being replaced by Siegfried. He's still responsible for one more run.

Archer gave up a 2 run homer in the first, but right now stands at 4IP 4H 2R 2ER 0BB 2K.

Archer is at 89 pitches thru 6(57 strikes) so I'm figuring he's done. Very solid outing, other than the homer and a few less K's than what we like to see from him. :D

I hadn't seen this anywhere yet... Arizona Phil gave an update on Reggie Golden and Hayden Simpson:

Reggie Golden has been nursing an injury and I think it's his hamstring, but I'm not positive.

If he gets the OK from his doctor, Hayden Simpson will make his on-field pro debut in the AZ Instructional League next month.

I'll take that. Show me you're not walking a lot of people and I'm happy. His stuff is good enough to get the job done so long as he's not walking guys.

Let me be the first to say, WTF Marquez Smith? Yet another HR tonight making that 6 in his last 11 games and an OPS that should climb over 1.000 after tonight.

He could be another guy they may want to start taking some grounders at 1st. hes 24 or 25, so a bit on the old side for a prospect, but not in Hoffpauir/LaHair/Snyder territory yet.

Well, he's listed as 5'10", so he may not be the best choice for a first baseman.

I'd love him as the Jeff Baker replacement. With all the time Armais has been missing he'd get a decent amount of at bats.

It'd be wiser to once again give Smith grounders at second, not first.

Poor Rhee. :(

Marquez didnt just pop up out of nowhere. Every year in the minors since being drafted in the 8th round in 2007, hes put up respectable numbers, with .280sh avg. and OPS in the .800 neighborhood every year (.816, .830, .794) and a bit of power 8 HR in '07, 17 in '08 and 15 in '09.

I'm getting concerned about Rhee ever recapturing the magic.

Fixed.

I've been talking about him for a couple days now. :D

He's been incredible. He's got at least a ten game hitting streak, but he's been hitting well over .300 since June. And the HRs in August are just sick.

I know. There's something to be said for this being his first season back from surgery. If he's like this next year...

Yeah, I'm more than willing to give him till next season since this is his first full season back from TJS. While his strikeout numbers are down, he had a sub-4 ERA just 3 or 4 starts ago. I still haven't heard if he's allowed to throw his splitter this season (he wasn't allowed last year in the few starts he made).

It's his first full year back, but he's two years removed from the surgery now, isn't he? That's an awfully long recovery from TJS.

Yeah. He had his surgery in July 2008 but everything about his rehab seems to have been slow tracked.

18-year old Arismendy Alcantara is up to a .271 batting average and a .718 OPS at Boise. Keep in mind that Junior Lake and Starlin Castro were at Mesa in their age 18 season.

His recovery reminds me painfully of Luke Hagerty. Hopefully I'm wrong about that.

Interesting, Robinsons Chirinos line in 6 games at Iowa (.318/.412/.580/.991) is virtually identical to his 77 at Tenn (.318/.400/.591/.991). I really hope that they give Robinson the chance to win that backup C job next year, but then again, they may prefer play him full time at Iowa and keep Castillo on as Geos backup. However, with Jim Hendry likely back for more, we may see Koyie Hill get a 3 year extension with a player option and full NTC.

Hagerty was a complete and total disaster coming back from TJS. He had it back in 2003 and pitched a little over 30 innings with the Cubs in the three years following his surgery. Rhee at least has had a number of good starts this year. It's also worth keeping in mind that Rhee's professional high in IP was 40, set two years ago prior to going down because of injury. He's currently at 111 IP.

I think Rhee's problem at this point in the season is that his arm isn't used to this sort of stress and strain. He needs to prove he can hold up as a starting pitcher over the course of a season. Unfortunately, outings like these will happen as he builds up his conditioning.

Exactly what I was thinking with regards to IP. He's nearing three times his career high in IP (more than Cashner threw last year, for example) while pitching his first real season following TJS. He's fallen apart in August but before his bad stretch of late, he had a sub-4 ERA. There's probably too little data on Rhee to come to any sort of conclusion here.
