Maybe they were just making excuses for why Phelps didn't do crap.

The outer lanes are slower and have been forever. The fact that you only learned that yesterday is why you think it's just a rationalization.

Rowdy Gaines was trying to claim that Lane 8 was a good place to be because you have calm water on one side and Phelps can see where he stands down the stretch since he breathes to his right. It seems like one of those conventional wisdom things you can twist to mean whatever you want it to mean.

haha, I don't really think it's just a rationalization. I'm sure there was a detriment to being on the outside given that the best are always given the middle spot. I just didn't know what it was.

And excuse me for not knowing about the dynamics of competition swimming until now. Yeesh..

I've read that technological improvements in pool design and lane dividers have mitigated much of the disadvantage of the side lanes. Mostly now its about seeing the top competition better.

this is true. top notch pools (been swimming in one while in melbourne for work - the pool i've been using hosted the 2006 commonwealth games and 2007 world swimming championships) have a flat edge so that water churned up by the outer lanes will just spill into the drain rather than bouncing back at the swimmer. the only real downside to being on an outer lane at this point - and it's still a big disadvantage - is that the top swimmers usually gun for a good time in the semis so the top swimmers will tend to be in lanes 4/5 for the final, and any swimmer on the outside lanes will have a hard time using the swimmers in lanes 4/5 to pace.

4 pairs of olympic badminton players are charged with trying to throw matches to improve seeding.

all four pairs were banned.

i'm enjoying the whitewater kayak thing. looks like a pretty grueling workout and receives the truffleshuffle seal of approval.

on the other hand, men's field hockey (???) receives an emphatic thumbs down.

Shocking that China is trying to cheat. They are like the SEC of the Olympics.

I don't know how you can cheat in the Olympics any more (outside of throwing matches). They test the ever-loving [expletive] out of your blood. Blood-doping would seem to be pretty easy to catch

And yet bike races still happen.

I thought field hockey was only for women. Do they fight at all?

the south african swimmer who beat phelps last night was so shocked and excited. definitely one of my favorite moments so far. the swimming has been a little boring compared to the craziness last time, so i went back and watched the jason lezak relay. i think all races should be like that.

also, someone should say how great the gymnastics was, most notably our crazy vaulter's crazy vault. the only bad thing was that all day i was looking forward to watching us make the russians cry even before the last rotation started (as promised by the live blogs), but then when i saw it i felt awful.

on the subject of cheating, the chinese have a history of lying about their gymnasts' ages and have been stripped of medals in the past. there was a lot of suspicion and an investigation when they won in 2008. they didn't medal this time.

Is there rampant blood-doping happening in Olympic bicycle racing?

i think the joke is that bicycle racing is full of dopers, including its most famous champion, there mr serious.

Sure, but we were talking about Olympic swimming

It's naive to think that it's pretty easy to catch the dopers. Everybody who follows sports knows that the drugs are ahead of the tests. There's a lot more money in cheating than in catching the cheaters.

My cousin served as stroke (essentially the pace-setter) for the men's 8+ rowing team that rowed in the finals this morning. (He was in Beijing too in the fours where they finished 9th.) He finished 4th this time, three-tenths of a second out of the medals. Tough to take, I'd bet, but he did a hell of a job.
