It's track and field, of course he's on something. Him and every other person with a chance of winning a medal. No PED in the world is going to make him take 3 fewer strides to cover the same distance as everyone else though. He's 4-6 inches taller than his main competition, that's more advantage than taking slightly better drugs would ever be.

But then why aren't all world class sprinters 6-5 then? You would think they'd have the market cornered.

I'm not a sprinting expert, but I imagine it's because it's pretty difficult to be that tall and still have the explosiveness to stick with the shorties until the advantage in stride kicks in. Bolt certainly isn't blowing people away in the first 50 meters of his races.

Correct.

The cars with LED lights all over them were cool.

Didn't care much for those riding in the cars, however (for the most part).

Brian May standing in the middle of the stage wailing on his guitar was good.

Eric Idle is always good.

i thought you said his height was an advantage, but now you're saying it's a disadvantage.

anyhow, if we're all in agreement as to where he gets his explosiveness from, the argument still stands, why isn't the sport inundated with giants?

and i think the US is operating at a disadvantage when it comes to sprinting. with the gatlin, montgomery, and marion jones disgraces still looming over their heads, i think they are more reticent to engage in the brazen cheating that the third-world jamaicans seem to be engaging in.

Shot putter Nadzeya Ostapchuk of Belarus became the first athlete to be stripped of a medal at the London Olympics after her gold was withdrawn Monday for doping.

I'm saying that Bolt is unique, which answers both your concerns. He's the rare tall guy(although the 100 is littered with 6-2 and 6-3 winners) with the explosiveness to stay with the pack out of the blocks and then use his stride to pull away.

he has explosion because he's working with a really really good chemist.

pretty good article.

i can understand people wanting to see other people run fast but this whole "he's just the best at doing drugs" and being strangely proud of that opinion is [expletive] unbearable.

he was a tall, average sprinter that started doing PEDs and changed the game. he's a cheater, and it's his type that causes us to not be able to have nice things.

as weird as he is, i don't think carl lewis ever did PEDs. he may be the last great clean champion.

So your stance is that Bolt was a run of the mill sprinter whose drugs are so much better than everyone else that now he leaves everyone in the dust? I find that really hard to believe in an event like track and field. Moreover, in an event that is simply running, I have a hard time getting worked up about who is dodging the arbitrary "performance enhancing" line the most.

i get it, it's cool not to care, i'm ok with that. but as i implied before, i don't think jamaica has as much to lose as the US in this one, which is why they're cutting edge when it comes to doping and have cats like angel heredia hanging around.

i'd really really prefer to watch guys who aren't eating fetal stem cells for breakfast, though.and i can't wait to see lance armstrong and usain bolt go down.

Yeah I agree with you. I'm not sure where he gets the "average" or "run of the mill" sprinter here. Some of you may not realize, but in his final Jamaican High School Championships in 2003, he ran a 20.25 200m and a 45.35 400m. This was at the age of 17. Then his tournament debut 100m in 2007 I believe, he ran a personal best 10.03. That's not an "average or run of the mill" sprinter.

he went from 10.03 in 2007 to 9.69 in 2008, whooping and hollering like an ape with a pocket-watch to the finish line.

i'm wondering what 10.03 would have gotten him at the olympics. i'm talking average by olympic standards, not regular guy standards, i should make that clear.

Seriously? That's like saying Mark Cuban is an average business man.

I'm talking average by billionaires standard, not regular guy standard.

BTW... 10.03 would've been last in this Olympics. 6th and 7th were 9.94 and 9.98. That 10.03 time was his very first time at an official race. Think about that.
