The Canadians are upset at the time wasting call on the GK, and then for the handball right after. If it happened to my team I wouldn't be too happy about the handball, but it's one of those unfortunate calls that is going to be made. The girl's arms were up and slightly away from her body, so even though she was trying to move away there's still plenty of justification right after. The time wasting call seemed to be the tipping point of the ref being fed up with Canada's keeper. I didn't see the game, but saw several highlights of her taking 10-15 seconds to get rid of the ball, in most cases rushing out to the edge of the 18 before bouncing the ball and pump faking for 10 seconds before finally punting the ball. Both teams were warned about time wasting at the half too. It's not a common call, but it easily could've been avoided by the Canadian keeper not being laughably transparent, or just letting the ball roll and taking a free kick instead of punting.

Sinclair's not wrong; Canada was completely hosed by those two calls. The first (holding the ball too long before putting it back into play) is almost never, ever, ever called at the international level. I can't even recall the last time I saw it called. To be fair, their keeper was pretty stupid about how she was handling restarts, but still, it's so rare of a call, and in that kind of a situation, it's harsh.

The handball was less dubious, but you can make the case that the ball played her arm, and her arm was in a natural position, ie not extended at a right angle to her body or something. The L.O.T.G. state a handball has to be intentional, more or less, to be called a PK. Now, I've seen that one called plenty, so it's more of a ref's discretion thing. But the combination of the two makes it pretty shady.

Combine this with other calls against Canada when playing the US (mostly on the men's side; there was a completely botched offsides call in a Gold Cup semi in 2007 which wiped a tying goal off the board in stoppage time), and I totally understand why she would feel aggrieved.

Someone on NBC this morning said it had been called once before, never in the Olympics.

I've seen it a couple times at the club level, never at the international level.

It gets called in high school and college, but that's because most of the refs working those games are garbage.

Apparently Wambach was going over to the referee and counting off the seconds when it was happening, and that call was like the 6th or 7th time she had reached double digits.

ETA: I've never seen it called either, but I also don't remember someone physically holding on to the ball that whole time either, especially every time they touch the ball. Most keepers have the good sense to just put the ball on the ground when they're going to kill clock, and it's why I really have a hard time having much sympathy for the Canadians.

Hahaha. This I like.

Why do I feel like if Dempsey or Donovan did this, they'd get carded for dissent or something stupid?

I agree with you; if the keeper does what normally happens, which is to hold onto the ball until 7 and then drop it on the ground to waste an extra 10 seconds, that call never happens.

Huh, sure enough...

The combination of the two calls is what looks bad. Especially the handball -- which I would not have called regardless -- following the time-wasting call (which is never called). But I was happy it was called -- Canada's goalie's time-wasting was rather egregious and, after being warned, there has to be some penalty for her flaunting the rules.

i watched diving for 8 years during high school and college, and i saw some bad dives, but i never saw someone just completely blow up and land on their back like that. after watching it in slow motion and reading about the dive, he lost his grip on his back leg, which sent him out of control pretty quickly.

So with France down 5 to Spain with 30 seconds left they started fouling. Except they started fouling via nut-punching, leading to back to back flagrants (or whatever they call it in the Olympics)
