Cubs could continue trading

And I love alliterations, but I digress:

The Cubs have already traded Ted Lilly, Ryan Theriot and Mike Fontenot, but they may not be done yet. Yesterday’s deal could actually be a precursor to more moves in August.

''It's hard to say if it'll be the last one,'' assistant GM Randy Bush told the Chicago Sun-Times. ''Anything that we can do that we feel is to the betterment of the organization we're going to continue to look at.''

Jeff Baker, Kosuke Fukudome and Xavier Nady could be traded this month. Fukudome makes $13.5MM next year, so his contract would clear waivers. Nady, who has just under $1MM remaining on his contract this year, could also be traded. He drew some interest from the Rangers back in July.

I'd assume Fukudome might be a little easier to move now, especially since he's had a hot streak going. We'd obviously still have to pick up a good portion of his salary.

Hopefully they're financially motivated to not field [expletive] teams anymore. Seeing as how this isn't even the first time Hendry has pulled off the "one of the worst records while being one of the highest payrolls" trick, I don't know how they can even consider letting him keep his job. He really is an embarassment.

I wonder how much is financially motivated. Revenues have to be down. Nobody is watching games. Seats are empty. Less beer is being sold.

Probably more a financial consideration for next year, since Lee is the only one of the big contracts ending. The only way to compete with all those hefty under-performing contracts is to fill the roster with cheap talent do some finger-crossing. Castro, Dewitt, and Colvin doesn't light the world on fire, but it does provide dirt cheap starter talent (with the hope of being better than replacement level).

Colvin and DeWitt are up for debate but, unless this year is just a fluke, Castro's much better than just hoping for better than replacement level.
