Question for smart people:

Does anyone know if Kurcz projects as a starter or if he's more likely to stay in relief. He's been insanely good so far and I'd be interested to see how he does as a starter.

He's more likely to stay in relief and that he wasn't even stretched out for a little while this season indicate he's definitely going to be fast-tracked as a reliever.

Chirinos' numbers are getting pretty Pujolsian. 33/40 K/BB and a .261 ISOP? I know he turned 26 recently but my god. The last 4 years his OPS has gone .715 > .834 > .915 > .982 . The guy should be getting all of Koyie's ABs.

He's a 26 year old who has never reached AAA and is only now hitting AA in his FOURTH season there. Castillo or Robinson are both better bets if you want Hill gone.

I just got home from the Peoria game and damn did they suck tonight. (Both teams did)

The 1st inning took almost an hour to complete and ended with the Chiefs leading 3-1. There was 1 hit in the entire inning, a 2 run single from Mercedes. (It didn't help that the River Bandits pitcher was trying to be Steve Trachsel and take as long as possible between pitches.)

Wallach did not look good. He had no control and little movement. Hopefully whoever worked with Archer can help him, because if he doesn't improve dramatically, he isn't getting past Daytona at best.

There were two plays by the Chiefs that pissed me off. One was a bunt where Logan Watkins didn't bother to cover first. Luckily Wallach was able to run and barely tag the batter. The second was a possible DP fielded by Bour to Lee, but the pitcher at the time once again didn't cover first. This is just stupidity. I guess the entire Cubs organization is infected by it.

Lee looked okay at the play and had a couple slick plays at short. Bour sucks. Ha is improving but still needs to build his pitch recognition.

I'm going to have to disagree here, I think. Chirinos had 306 at bats in AA prior to this season. But, he's shown himself very well last year in Daytona and this year in Tennesse as well.

Soto had 736 very pedestrian at bats in Iowa before it clicked for him there in his third try as well.

Definitely not saying Chirinos will ever be anything other than a backup C, but I do think I'd take him over Castillo. Chris Robinson wouldn't even enter into the equation for me anyway.

So...what the heck happened in Boise that caused a forfeit?
Whatever happened was during an inning. Boise was losing 2-0 with 2 out in the bottom of the 1st. The last play was a run-scoring double. Nothing in the game recap indicates the reason for the forfeit.

Jody Davis told the umps to suck it.

Seriously though, there was a rain delay and Davis didn't think the field was playable, but the umps did. He refused to have the Hawks take the field and the umps called the game a forfeit:

A Google search revealed a story about the forfeit. What happened was that there was a rain delay at the point where the box score stopped (2 out in the bottom of the first). After a delay of more than an hour the umpires declared the field ready to play. Jody Davis disagreed and felt the field was not suitable for play and refused to send the team out. After waiting five minutes the umpires awarded a 9-0 forfeit to Eugene.

Here is a more detailed explanation on the Boise forfeit.

The game was initially delayed for more than an hour due to inclement weather, with a steady rain falling throughout much of the day in Everett. Umpires Matt Heersema and Matt Mullins ruled the conditions playable for an official 8:25 p.m. first pitch, however, and the teams took to the field for the top of the first inning.

The AquaSox scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning with the second runs coming on a double by Hawkins Gebbers to left that caused Hawks left fielder Ryan Cuneo to seemingly slip on the outfield grass.

Boise Manager Jody Davis had a discussion with the umpires following the play, and ended up calling his team off the field and into the visitor's dugout, arguing the conditions were unsafe. The umpire crew discussed the situation with both managers for a period of time before signaling to resume play.

Gebbers retook his spot on second base and Evan Sharpley stepped up to bat, but the Hawks refused to take the field and ended up forfeiting the ballgame. By rule, the AquaSox win 9-0.

Isn't it about time for Carpenter's call up?

Not if you value consistency. He's had two great starts in a row. Prior to that, two pretty bad ones and one where he didn't allow any runs in 4 innings but also walked 4.

From all the scouting reports, he's got the stuff, but his command has always been a little shaky (3.6 walks per 9 last year, a little higher this year) and for some reason, he's gotten hit more this season. Could just be a mix of normal variance and moving up from A+ to AA, but hitters hit .210 against him last season and have hit .266 so far this season. Carpenter has followed the normal model of a player at a new level. He had a rough April and May, turned it around since then. For me personally, I would like to see two more starts of a similar quality as the last two before promoting him to AAA. I have no idea what the Cubs need to see.

When September call ups are made, Im betting that Castillo is called up and Chirinos goes to Iowa. The only reason I could think of why Chirinos hasnt made it to Iowa yet is because Castillo is the starter there, and they want Chirinos as an everyday starter as well, not a backup. Otherwise, theres no reason he should be blocked by Chris Robinson.

This is only the second year that Chirinos has been a full-time catcher, so that is probably a factor in why he is still at AA (where he can get most of the PT rather than share it with Castillo). Considering that the hitting bar is set rather low for a backup catcher in the majors, it certainly seems like he can hit enough to qualify if his defense is solid. He leads the SL in OPS at 0.995. His ability to play around the infield could give him some extra value as a utility guy. He has slaughtered LHP the last couple of seasons (1.059 OPS in 2009, 1.247 OPS so far this season), so maybe he has some value as a platoon specialist/pinch hitter as well.

This is Chirinos 10th season in the Cubs system, so it would be cool if he finally did make it all the way. I don't know if he is a major leaguer or not, but he certainly seems to be too good to be in AA.

Well, there are only 6 regular season games for Iowa in September and both Iowa and Tennessee are on track to make the playoffs so we'll see.
