The PTBNL is Andrew Lambo, bwahahahahahahahahaha.

Are you laughing because the Dodgers got swindled or because you think the Pirates got a bad player?

I kinda like Lambo, despite his struggles.

Dodgers got swindled, imo. McDonald for Dotel was iffy enough as it was.

The more I research on both of these players the more I can see why the Dodgers dealt them. McDonald has struggled in AAA this year and is almost 26 while Lambo is currently a light-hitting left fielder who has supposedly failed two drug tests.

It's still too much to give for Octavio Dotel, but I probably wouldn't have taken either of them over DeWitt or Wallach. I wouldn't have minded McDonald instead of Smit though.

Exactly the types of deals the Pirates need to make. Struggling players with strong tools, who have fallen out of favor with their current teams. They don't have the talent to trade for elite prospects. They are not attractive to top free agents. Their best hope of ever competing again is to take chances on players like McDonald and Lambo and hope their player development can salvage them. Of course, the Pirates player development has been very lackluster for a long, long time.

We all would have but I believe Smit was a throw-in and the trade centered around DeWitt and Wallach. You weren't going to get much better.

i don't think their player development was really terrible, it just wasn't good enough to produce a completely home grown team that was good enough to rival other teams that used free agency extensively. and i think the pirates are putting a lot more emphasis on player development, draft spending and international free agent spending... at least since they basically gutted management and started over.

No their player development was terrible up until about 3 years ago. Partially a function of ownership refusing to spend on the draft, and partially a function of Ed Creech having manure for brains

While I think you're being kind to Ed Creech, overall you're correct here.

Additionally, as they were dismantling what they inherited, there was a concerted effort to get talent at different levels. Our trade deadline deals, including this one, are no different. We've promoted a lot of guys this year (Tabata, Walker, Alvarez) and our talent in the upper minors is really lacking (wasn't that great before these promotions.) We need players at this level.
