Source: Deal is 3-for-1. Happ in. #Astros would pay "very significant" part of Oswalt's remaining salary, which is over 23M. #MLB #Phillies

about 2 hours ago via web

If Oswalt goes and #Astros won't trade Myers, #Cubs' Lilly will be best SP left on mkt. GM Hendry a deal-maker. Theriot could go, too. #MLB

Still pending Oswalt approving it.

Trading Cliff Lee really turned out be such a smart move for the Phillies

If it allowed them to afford Halladay, it's hardly been a dumb move.

But now they are trading for another starting pitcher who isn't as good but costs more and giving up more players. I didn't at the time and still don't buy that they traded Lee for financial reasons also the Lee trade didn't impact the Halladay trade in terms of needing more prospects to complete the Halladay deal.

He doesn't cost more if Houston is picking up some of the tab.

Is there any reason why Oswalt wouldn't accept this trade?

Doesn't want to go to Philly? He can miss the playoffs in Houston and still be a hero, or go to the Phillies and risk missing the playoffs, in which case he's a bum.

Besides the obvious.

He has a 2.60 era at their ballpark. He'll be pitching behind Halladay with Hamels. His option is getting picked up, and the Phillies will be a major contender for the next couple of years unlike Houston.

Seems like a slam dunk to me.

They are throwing in less than $12m he is still owed some of the $15m on his contract for this year, he makes $16m next year, and he's been requesting and demanding that his $16m option for 2012 gets exercised in any trade. Cliff Lee made $5.75m this year.

Some people were saying they could've gotten Halladay without Lee being involved, IIRC.

Sure, some people were saying that. Doesn't make it so. I think it looked pretty clear like they were moving one guy to make room for the other. I'd have taken Halladay too.

While that's true, it's not going to happen it appears.

Rosenthal tweets that Oswalt's 2012 option will not be exercised; he'll be compensated some other way. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick tweets of a rumor that speedy outfield prospect Anthony Gose may be in the deal. AOL FanHouse's Ed Price tweets that he's hearing Gose and Worley could be in the deal.

Maybe he needs another tractor.

It better be one of those enclosed, air conditioned ones or I wouldn't waive that option.

Apparently the Astros are paying $11m in this deal. Happ, Gose, and Worley would be a decidedly bad return for them if that's the case.

I get *slight* feeling of warmth knowing their is one out there doing worse things than Hendry.
