i don't think it's a salary dump... they certainly have enough to pay him for two more months. they want to deal him because they know he's gone after this year and want to upgrade their rotation using a trade chip who's good and would be a desirable rental to a playoff team.

With Victorino to the DL and the Phillies calling up Brown, I wonder if they'll hold off on trading Werth now since it appeared they were trying to move him to make room for Brown in the first place. :-k

WTF are Cub fans doing craving Jason Werth?!? I thought everyone wanted Hendry to sell.

Type-A draft picks. If they're desperate and will take a #4 type pitcher for Werth, you can get Werth for an expendable pitcher you wouldn't mind parting with (who likely wouldn't be that great if he's a #4) and let Werth walk and take draft picks. I honestly don't care or not, but the thought did pop in my mind.

So the plan is to give up a #4 pitcher, spend a bunch of money this year on a guy that has no position, offer arbitration and risk being in the same situation all of next year, all for a couple draft picks that might not even be in the first 30 (assuming Werth remains a Type A despite a poor 2010)?

Seems a whole lot easier, cheaper and much less risky just to draft an extra overslot first-round talent or two in the 2nd-10th rounds.

Wait wait wait.

On what planet has Jayson Werth had a poor 2010 season?

FOX 26 in Houston reporting #Astros and #Phillies have deal in place for Oswalt. Trying to confirm. His approval would be required.

Who did we get for Palmiero...did that involve Mitch Williams...I wanna say that trade was made in the off season?

Traded by Chicago Cubs with Jamie Moyer and Drew Hall to Texas Rangers in exchange for Mitch Williams, Paul Kilgus, Steve Wilson, Curt Wilkerson, Luis Benitez and Pablo Delgado (December 5, 1988).

Great trade

If I recall correctly, Drew Hall was the Cubs top prospect at the time, also.

Hall was the Cubs' first round draft pick (3rd overall) in 1984. I think he was considered a bust by the time he was traded, though. He pitched in 21 games for the Cubs in 1987 (6.89 ERA) and 19 games in 1988 (7.66 ERA); all of his appearances both years were in relief.

EDIT: I wonder if you're actually thinking of Mel Hall. He was a top prospect who was traded to Cleveland in 1984 as part of the Rick Sutcliffe trade.

ESPN is reporting this, too.

I hope Oswalt goes today just to end all speculation there, and then we can focus on Lilly. Perhaps GM's are waiting to see what kind of return Oswalt gets before they focus on Lilly?

7:37am: SI's Jon Heyman hears the Astros and Phillies were discussing Happ, righty Vance Worley, and two younger pitchers (Twitter link). Worley, a 22-year-old righty, spent most of 2010 at Double A, posting a 3.20 ERA, 6.6 K/9, and 2.9 BB/9. Baseball America ranked him 18th among Phillies prospects heading into the season, predicting a future as a back-end starter or middle reliever.
