I really think Turco will do well with the defensive unit he has in front of him. Looking at his numbers in Dallas the last few years they are not too bad, but for the money the Hawks will be paying him it will be well worth it.

Really looking forward to the season now that the team is just about complete.

I definitely see both of your points SSR/JCF. I'm possibly injecting my own person opinion in on this matter where I'd rather be the starting goalie for a cup contender at 2 million then play with another team for 2.75. Not a drastic difference in cash especially speaking with a 1 year deal.

Oh well, I'm thrilled about Turco at 1.3

I'm satisfied with the situation but I can't say thrilled. I'm going to stick by the 5 year rule with these guys though and can't complain about what they've done.

I'd imagine Niemi gets more than the 2M the Hawks offered, so I don't see how his agent overvalued him.

i don't know. i think they played themselves out of a sure thing.

It's doubtful he has to settle for a garbage contract now. They said from day one Niemi may be more comfortable not being in Chicago anyway.

that's funny, are you talking physically or mentally? because a half season of starting for a team other than the hawks will have him lounging comfortably on the bench.

his GAA will go up about a goal.

Thank God for rational people on here. I've had to deal with a lot of idiots today claiming how this move absolutely hurts the Hawks for next year.

Stick Turco with our defense in front of him and I think his production is probably better than Niemi. I'm not afraid of saying that. Thanks for an outstanding playoff run, but Turco, at less than half of what Niemi is getting, is an outstanding value.

I wish Stan Bowman was the GM of all of my teams.

It feels so nice to have one team in this city where I trust that the front office knows what they are doing.

it hurts niemi more than anyone. someone may give him the 2.75 per for a couple of years he's looking for, but he could stay in chicago for a couple at the 2 we were offering, post a GAA in the low 2's with a .915-.920 SP, then sign somewhere for big money and fade away like he inevitably will.

I like your other one with Leddy in there.

I think the problem with that is that he's owed like 90k at Rockford and 850 or so up with the big club. I know it's some ridiculous disparity that makes him too expensive this year.

Agreed but I think Niemi can be productive in the right situation. If he and his agent are smart he shouldn't disappear.

Bowman has handled this offseason as well as he possibly could have in my opinion.

Is Niemi already a finished product? Wasn't he basically a rookie last year?

He was a rookie, but an older one. And he's just a goalie. It's not like he's some forward adjusting to the NHL and his teammates. I'm not sure he can get better just with time.

I could be picky and say he could've ditched Campbell instead of some of the other salary clearing moves he's made, but I imagine it's probably the case that he actually couldn't do that...

Yeah I get that. 26 is an old rookie considering how many sub 23s are leading their teams.

Still is it out of the question that he settles in nicely as an above average goalie? I'm not questioning the move, just wondering.

I love how Bowman just took care of business quick. It's done, just like that. No need to mull it over for days or weeks.

I haven't really followed Turco recently, but look at the dollars -- that's a good deal. I fully expect, however, to hear alot of hand wringing in the Chicago press over this because our SC winning goalie is gone immediately following the Championship.

i was told it's 67k or 900k. in which case i understand.

i like leddy, but he may be best suited for next year. he's only 19.

Thanks, I knew it was something crazy. He'll need another year or so of seasoning anyways I think

The rules made that decision for him.

he had turco waiting in the wings. once the 2.75 number came out for niemi, i'd say he had the deal done the same day.

if niemi won't work with the hawks, there's other goaltenders of similar ability that will.

sorry, i'm having fun with capgeek right now, but they could also bring in jay mckee on a one-year deal for about a mil or less, raise hendry to 675,000 and look very tough on defense. mckee essentially replaces sopel and perhaps is slightly better and even younger.

A Red Wings fan in my office was nice enough to (excitedly) point out that Turco has a 1-9-2 career record at Joe Louis Arena.

And for good reason. You just don't take the Stanley Cup winning goalie off your team without people raising their eyebrows, no matter for how good a reason.
