If the Cubs are serious about making any attempt to compete this year, Aramis needs to be DL'd now. One could make the argument that he should have been put on the DL two weeks ago, but there is nothing that can be done about that at this point. A .162 average and .496 OPS are historically inept numbers, and we're not talking about a small sample size anymore (167 at bats). It is time to put him on the DL with the thumb injury, give him a week or so to heal up, then let him try to figure things out in a rehab assignment. Chad Tracy gives the Cubs the best chance to win right now (assuming that Fontenot plays 2B over Theriot). Part of the blame lies with Lou continuing to pencil Aramis into the cleanup spot and, along with a relapsed Derrek Lee, forming the weakest 3-4 combo in baseball, but Lee has at least shown some flashes. Aramis hasn't been productive all year and I'm tired of watching him fail.

As I posted in the Game Thread, I blame Hendry now. Aram want(ed) to work through it himself, and that's fine, but it's not working. Lou has the authority to force him to work with Jaramillo and/or drop him in the order until he gets it together. So far he's done neither, and continues to pencil Aramis in the #4 or #5 spot, giving us an automatic out in the middle of our order.

So now, seeing as the player and the manager refuse to do anything, it's now up to the General Manager to step in and take charge and either DL him with his thumb, force him to work with Jaramillo and/or have Lou drop him in the order. However, Hendry isn't a "tell the manager how to do his job" kind of guy, so unfortunately this is going to continue for quite a while yet.

Wicked handling of the situation. It reminds of me of last year with Soriano. Oh well, maybe he can have some surgery in August or September and come back in 2011.

I really wish we would just call and ask what it would take to get Alex Gordon. I'm betting Theriot would do it knowing Dayton Moore.

that would be so awesome. maybe getting out of KC and working with a good hitting coach could help Gordon adjust to the majors.

Wed probably have to give up something good for Gordon, but he may very well be worth it. The goop thing about Gordon is that even if Ramirez starts playing, and we end up keeping him next year, he could also play 1B in 2011, and then after the 2011 season we could send him back to third and go after Adrian or Fielder.

Unrealistic trade proposal:

Cubs get:

Alex Gordon

Zack Greinke

Royals get

Josh Vitters

Brett Jackson

Jay Jackson

Casey Coleman

Randy Wells

Now might be the worst time you could possibly trade for Greinke. He's a very good SP, but his ERA+ for 07, 08, 09, 10 are: 124, 126, 205, 123 (yes, through 2 months). You really want to buy high and pay him $27m for the next 2 years?

We would not have to give up anything good for Gordon. They just made a roster move and brought up Wilson Bettemit to play inflied. Gordon has an OPS of over 1.200 and they left him down.

Yeah, usually its the Cubs devaluing their prospects, but Gordon is just sitting there collecting dust and who can turn down a great pitcher like Silva :D)

i say we try to throw aramis 400 more plate appearances and see if he can't set some records.

Now I'm curious. What's the lowest SLG, OBP, and OPS for a non-pitcher in a season, minimum 500 PA's?

It's gotta be Rafael Santana.

In all seriousness, I wonder of Jeff Samardzjia for Alex Gordon is a possibility. Much like Gordon, Shark is a former top prospect whose team has pretty much given up on him, and maybe a change of scenery would do him good. Of course, Shark would have to waive the NTC that he never should have had to begin with, but I suppose he would considering hes much more likely to get a shot with KC than with us. Maybe throw in one of our AAAA guys like Fuld, Hoffpauir, or Snyder. Maybe Theriot if it gets the job done.

Samardzjia was supposedly willing to waive his NTC to go to the O's in the infamous Brian Roberts deal so I don't see why he wouldn't do the same for KC. Right now he's probably behind Jackson, Schlitter and Parker in terms of possibly being promoted. You could also probably add Coleman to that list and there's always Gray and Berg.

I don't have P-I , so I can't see the names, but these are the lows for those qualifying for a batting title (502 PAs):

OBP: 222

SLG: 225

OPS: 461

I'm guessing that was either Neifi Perez (as a Cub) or Lenny Harris (as a Cub).

In all seriousness, Aramis and Lou have an outside shot of approaching those records.

Where did you see that he was willing? All I've seen Samardzjia do is emphatically refuse to waive his no trade clause. He's come out and said that the reason he chose baseball over football was so that he could stay close to home and pitch for the Cubs which is why he demanded the no trade clause in the first place.

Yeah, that was my recollection of the situation as well.

At this point, how is Iowa closer to home than anywhere else (besides the West Coast). Even outside of the NLC, everything is a two-hour flight. Maybe if he didn't suck at pitching we wouldn't need to have this discussion.

Of course, Hendry was a fool for giving a proven wide receiver a five-year, $10 million, no-trade-clause-included contract to pitch.

I have not heard him emphatically refuse to waive his NTC. And I doubt very much now it's about being close to home. He's a big boy, and he's a couple states away from home playing many of his games out west. I'm sure being local mattered at the time, but getting a NTC is a great negotiating power for any player. He knew Hendry was desperate to get him to give up the NFL, so he got the NTC. But I'm sure his biggest desire is to be pitching in the major leagues instead of Des Moines.

He hasn't said it himself, but his agent said there was no chance. And he only has less than a year before he has to either stick in the major leagues or have every team pass on him anyway.

just tell the jerk that kc is basically no further away from chicago than des moines and that he can choose which of those two cities he'd prefer to play in, because those are the only options.

I'd think that Shark would jump at the opportunity of a trade. He aint going anywhre with the Cubs, so a fresh start might benefit him, especially with better options on the farm if we need one.
