What Hanley did was dumb and was an obvious lack of effort but why didn't the left fielder go after the ball when he saw Hanley jogging?

LF's momentum was taking him towards the infield when the ball got booted, and I'm sure the LF assumed Hanley would give a tad more effort in chasing it down

Sure but Hanley gave him plenty of time to change his mind.

It would have been funny if, after watching Hanley jogging, the LF sprinted over to the ball and got there before Hanley did.

by the way, this isn't new for hanley. apparently he's on his way to mannyland. uggla called him out hard in the clubhouse last year too and apparently he has a habit of doing this type of stuff.

and i don't see how anybody can watch the video of the play and side with hanley. i'm NOT the type of fan that complains about hustle often, but that was ridiculous. i don't see how hanley can be mad about being pulled for the game. that was embarrassing.

oh, and his performance on the field hasn't been as good this season as it's been in the past either. he has like an .850 ops and has pretty mush stopped trying to steal bases

This obviously doesn't account for his base stealing, but his BABIP is 34 points lower than it's ever been in a single season before. He had a .351 BABIP during his first four years and it's .295 this year. Only a 2% drop in his LD% this year from his career according to B-R but FanGraphs shows it as down nearly 6% from his career average.

which is more reliable? fangraphs has his LD% as his 13.2, which is pretty bad and way lower than anything he's put up.

it also has his GB% all the way to 57.4. his previous season high was 45.8 in 2008 and is at 42.9 for his career.

his k percentage is also down though. looks like he's putting the ball in play a lot but is hitting it pretty weakly as a result of that, which would help explain the poor babip.

but seriously, again, people are failing to understand that hanley is super-good, meaning, he's not like most players and you can't treat him like other players. why can't people get this through their heads?

he's better than everyone else, he doesn't have to do the little things that don't really make a difference anyway. there are plenty of teams that will take him, laziness and all, if the marlins want to bench him.

You can't treat him like everybody else, but there's nothing wrong with pressing him to try harder.

I don't agree with that at all. Even though he's super-talented that doesn't give him the right to dog a play or lash out verbally at the manager. He's still 1 of 25 and young enough that these sort of lessons should have meaning.

By doing this, he is sending a message that it's okay to disrespect your manager and play according to your own rules. That's not how baseball works.

Maybe if erik was a manager he'd beat up his players in the parking lot and steal their wallets.

No, but I'd expect them to play like they give a damn. They can play hard, or they can sit on the bench. If they don't want to play hard, there are plenty of other people behind them just itching to play every day and take their spot. Especially if he gets lippy and badmouths the manager in the press.

I agree with his benching, and if he'd loaf like that again, he'd sit for the rest of the game and all of the next one.

That's always how I thought major league baseball works.

You're thinking of the NBA.

that's true, i was just addressing the people who think a baseball team should be some sort of model of egalitarianism. the object of baseball is to win, not make sure everyone has a good time.

erik makes a good point, if hanley wants to be a jerk, there a lots of players itching to get through the door and play everyday.

granted, those players will probably contribute similar defense and 1/8 the offense of hanley, and therefore lose games that the marlins should've won, but it'll be awesome to stick it to hanley the olde tyme way.
