Marquis's contract sucked because he was coming off a year where he put an ERA over 6, and there was no way it was necessary to pay him that much. Marquis was necessary in '07 unless you wanted Wade Miller's corpse or Neal Cotts as the 5th starter all year.

Harden was only necessary because we needed a stronger starter pitcher. Nolasco's 08 would have fit the bill perfectly and also would have prevented Harden's 09.

Nolasco had -- by far -- the lowest FIP-ERA amongst starting pitchers in 2009. He was incredibly unlucky.

 

Nolasco's no ace, but he's certainly above average. His biggest problem is that he's a fly ball pitcher (without a Pedro-esque K rate), so he's going to give up a lot of HR.

Setting aside Nolasco's performance for a moment, I'm still pissed off at the fact that Nolasco, Mitre, and Pinto could have netted something better than Juan [expletive] Pierre at the time they were traded. None of those three were considered future aces, but all of them had value on the trade market beyond the return they got.

Just another of Hendry's shortcomings. He had tunnel vision. He wanted his leadoff man at just about any cost-- price be damned. The Marlins knew this and got far more than they would have if all of baseball didn't know he was desperate.
