I know he's not the best source, but ...

I am hearing that Jim Hendry is looking to make a deal to boost the struggling Cubs. Not a minor move but looking much bigger than that. There is considerable sense of urgency with season heading in the wrong direction. Any deal will include pitching coming back to the Cubs.

Ugh, NO. Someone stop Hendry before he kills (the Cubs) again! Don't waste the first decent farm system they've had in years on an old, busted team on its last legs.

So we're going to make a big move for pitching, even though the starting pitching has been great, Lilly is almost back, and Gorzelanny and Silva have pitched well. That means we're either making a "big" move involving the bullpen, or making a big trade for someone to replace a currently successful starter. One is an extremely bad idea, and the other isn't really solving the "problem" of the Cubs lack of success so far, and would probably be a bad idea too.

The question is where do you put another bat unless you're trading a starting position player.

We've talked about 2B, but what kind of impact bats play 2B? If it's an OF, then you have to trade an OF unless you send Colvin down to the minors and try to platoon Soriano, Byrd Fukudome, and the new player. Catcher might be a possibility (if a bat is available), but they like Hill's defense. :-k

This is bad news let us die in peace. Our starting pitching is actually ok and doesn't need moves, so it has to be a pen arm and unless you are trading for Jonathan Broxton this is a horrible idea. It can't be for offense, unless its a 2B or SS because the rest of the spots are locked up. So what the hell are you going to trade for and how quickly should vitters pack his bags?

If the trade is Heath Bell for Vitters, I will kill myself.

I read what Kaplan wrote as the Cubs looking at a deal that INCLUDING a pitcher, which leads me to believe that the Cubs are looking at a multi-person trade. I maybe wrong, tho. If's it not that, I have a hard time believe that there is a team out there that is interested in trading right now, unless they get a deal they can't refuse. Right now, this is much ado about nothing.

Trading a SP (unless you can dump Z's contract) might be a worse idea than acquiring a SP. You expect Gorz and Fat [expletive] Silva to hold up for an entire year?

They might be looking to trade Gorz or Silva to take advantage of their hot starts.

They may also be looking at the starts that Cashner and Jackson have gotten off to and legitimately thinking they have backup plans if they trade a pitcher and Gorz or Silva starts to suck.

Cruz and Callaspo for Theriot, Grabow, prospect and cash

Dreaming....

Please!

Something along those lines would be not a blockbuster but a decent move. Not necessarily that exact offer. I would also check price tag on frasior, gregorson, cruz by himself, downs, maybe check with baltimore and maybe Bell but he will be too expensive.

If we're setting our sights on ripping off Dayton Moore, I'm looking at Alex Gordon instead of Callaspo.

With Lilly coming back, the obvious choice to trade is Gorzelanny.

How about Gorzelanny + Colvin + Berg/Stevens/Caridad for Scott Hairston + Heath Bell

Padres get younger and cheaper.

Cubs get versatile veteran OF plus big-time relief help.

this is exactly the sort of trade i don't want. Trading something valuable to add a bullpen arm to a crap team.

Man, that's a barfy trade.

Acquiring pitching is likely to be a bad trade. The offense is what needs to be addressed if you're making a trade. Having said that, the only position where it seems they could add offense right now would be (gulp) SS, unless you're talking about something colossal like trading Ramirez/Soriano/Fukudome, which I seriously doubt. Besides, two of those three are hitting.

Maybe they should trade for Geovany Soto.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Kid is off to a good start this year, hitting .286/.459/.429. That production would look real good behind the plate for the Cubs.

This thread scares me. The last thing the Cubs need is a "Jay Jackson for Taylor Tankersley" trade for the sake of trading.
