Mather took the loss in the Mets/Cards game. When was the last time a position player took a decision in a game?

Probably the last time a position player pitched.

Put a little thought into this before answering.

When do position players usually pitch? When it's a blowout loss. Not when it's a tight game.

For one it was sarcasm so don't get your panties in a bunch.

For two I would bet position players normally pitch when it is a super long extra inning game.

There have been some games, more than you'd think where a position player pitched in a close game, almost always games that go really deep into extra innings. As for ones that resulted in a decision by a position player, I have no idea.

I've seen more position players pitch in blowout games than in extra inning games. For example, when Grace pitched that one inning for the D-backs in 2002, they were losing 18-1 in the eighth.

Very well could be true. Not something I'm going to know off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure at least every year or two a position player pitches in a super long game.

I'd be willing to bet it's blow outs more often.

I'd bet on that as well. Extra inning games are generally going to be winnable for either team, so managers are likely going to keep real pitchers in there as long as you can. Of course 19 or 20 innings is just getting ridiculous though.

lol i love it when cubbiebum makes a dumb post and then tries to play it off like it was on purpose

a no-hitter and a game that goes 18 (or whatever) scoreless, quite a day for pitchers. the fact that it went 20 and the cards still lost AND we play the mets soon just makes me smile

I don't recall position players pitching in close extra inning games that often at all. Seems like managers are more likely to run a starter out there than a position player if the game is in extras. I'd say position players definitely pitch more often in the extreme blowout games. Every time I've seen a Cubs position player pitch, it has been a blowout. I remember Doug Dascenzo being a pretty decent blowout game relief pitcher. :hello:

And on the flip side, this game also featured a pitcher playing the field when Kyle Lohse entered to play left field in the 18th inning. He even got to make a putout in the next inning when Francoeur flied out to the track for what was then the go-ahead sacrifice fly.

He may be mistaken. Baseball Reference doesn't show that, and normally they do show pitching stats for position players (for example, they show both Doug Dascenzo's and Larry Biittner's pitching stats)..

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd bet he's mistakenly thinking of journeyman infielder Josh Wilson, who did take a loss against the D'backs for the Padres last season.

Probably so, he said it was against the D-backs. And yes, baseball reference is great. We use football-reference in our tecmo super bowl leagues and it's spot on every time.

Ole Miss Cub... Houston Dale Nutt is a joke. You'll find that out this season for sure.

You hog fans must have delusions of grandeur or something because I wouldn't call any coach at Ole Miss a joke if we went to 8 bowl games in 10 years and won the West 3 times in those 10 years. I don't care if the coach is a professional clown, I'd take that record any day of the week and twice on sunday. That said, there are plenty of things I don't like about him so far.

Sorry to derail the thread, but anyway, what makes us Hog fans delusional is that we want to compete for more than a West title every few years and a Cotton Bowl. We want BCS bowls and chances to play for the NC. Nutt would never get us there, Petrino might.
