we did?? Ha. that's news to me.

My guess is that the move is just a procedural move for the offseason.

That's my guess too, much like major league teams reinstating players from the 60-day DL during the offseason.

I completely forgot that Russ Canzler was a minor league FA. His performance this year has me mildly curious about him, and it'd be nice to have him in Iowa.

The Cubs continued making roster moves this week, both at the Major and Minor League levels. John Grabow was activated from the 60-day DL on Tuesday. Brad Snyder was outrighted off the Cubs 40-man roster Wednesday and became a free agent.

Eight players in the Cubs' system filed for free agency on November 6 and the Cubs re-signed four Minor League players eligible for free agency according to the transaction wire on Baseball America.

Bryan LaHair, Mitch Atkins, Mario Mercedes, Jeff Gray, Mark Reed, Russ Canzler, Scott McClain and Jason Dubois became free agents while Angel Guzman, Mike Parisi, J.R. Mathes and Jim Adduci re-signed with the Chicago Cubs.

Scott Moore back with the Cubs. Likely triple A. Barring a surprise Rule 5 selection or a surprise job winner in spring, the core of the I-Cubs for 2011 is probably set (Corner IF - Some combination of Moore, Marquez Smith, and Matt Spencer, Corner OF - Ty Wright/Brandon Guyer, CF - Tony Campana, 2nd - Tony Thomas, guessing SS Matt Camp, C Chirinos, Castillo and/or Robinson). Looks to be a pretty solid AAA PCL club that should be competitive offensively.

I guess there's a chance that he might be a cheap utility option off the bench, particularly if the club decides to part ways with Jeff Baker to save some dough.

- The Cubs announced on Thursday that they re-signed Bobby Scales to a minor league contract, along with left-handed pitcher Scott Rice. Scales and Rice, along with Angel Guzman, Jim Adduci and Scott Moore, received non-roster invitations to big league camp.

- Catcher Mark Johnson was granted free agency and is no longer in the Cubs' system.

- Micah Hoffpauir was cleared unconditional release waivers on Friday and the rights to his contract were sold to the Nippon Ham Fighters.

Brad Snyder has signed a minor league contract and has been invited to spring training. (I'm happy to hear that as he adds to our depth at that position and could be a nice bat off the bench.)

I don't know if this has been posted, but in the process looking up Ryan Harvey's stats (BA) for 2010 I found him listed as a RHP for the Pawtuket Red Sox. I will assume he has signed a 2011 contract with the Sox to be a pitcher. It appears to be, Harvey has finally realized his future is not with a bat in his hands, but rubber under his spikes. Is it stubbornness, stupidity or arrogance that blinded him for so long? I think its a little of all three with desperation sprinkled in.

Final thought, should we care?

According to BA's minor league transactions

We said goodbye to Jeremy Papelbon, David Patton, and Andres Quezada.

that's about a year and a half later than we should have gotten rid of david patton. i guess maybe someone finally clued the cubs into the fact that a player who is awful in single A as a 26 year old is probably not going to be a good player down the road.

The David Patton rule 5 pick (and subsequent keeping on a major league roster) is representative of the arrogance/ignorance of our front office. It didn't matter what his #s showed, they had some 80 year old that saw him strike out the side one time, and they were gonna show all those naysayers that they can find true talent.
