Drew Rundle pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in the Rookie-level Arizona League this season, recording strikeouts for three of his four outs. He walked two and allowed two hits. But pitching was only a last resort for Rundle, 21, whom the Cubs signed as a 14th-round pick in ’06 for a well-over-slot $500,000. For perspective, only one third-round pick that year got as much as Rundle—the Nationals' Stephen King, who recently returned from a 50-game drug suspension.

 

In four seasons as a position player, mostly a corner outfielder, Rundle batted just .227/.338/.380 with 16 home runs 258 games. Even as an amateur, he seemed like an imperfect fit as a center fielder, and he never did develop the power to profile on a corner. Rundle showed promise with short-season Boise in ’08, batting .292/.393/.563 in 53 games, but that success proved to be short lived. He peaked at the high Class A level, appearing in 18 games for Daytona over the years and batting .170/.250/.234.

And Yohan Gonzalez gets sent down first even though Gonzalez struck out the only batter he faced while Corey Martin gave up 2 runs in 1.2 IP!!! I don't get it.

Can they quit the yo-yo with Mota already? He went up to TN once, and didn't catch, then back down. so why move him again?

It is a mildly surprising move to see Mota in AA with Chirinos and Clevenger healthy. Maybe it means that Chirinos will be moving soon. I know the Cubs like Mota's glovework, but he needs PT.

 

Disappointing to see Latham's season tumble. I had high hopes for him when we signed him, and he was an intriguing power arm pre-DUI stuff. Gotta think that this doesn't bode well for his future with us.

I'd like that. With some work, it's easy to envision mid-upper 90's heat from him, assuming nothing's changed. The best part is, this was a kid that expressed that he was okay with pitching, and simply wanted to have a shot.

I saw Latham pitch last week. He showed a 93-95 mph FB. He also showed a temper. The home plate umpire squeezed him a couple of times and Latham pouted on the mound. He would walk off one side, circle around slowly to the other side, walk back up to the rubber and stare down the umpire. In the article, Latham said he was having success finishing games until the coaching staff started using him in different situations. Having a sense of entitlement in low A is not a precursor to a long career. I don't think Latham has much of a future in the Cubs organization.
