The David Patton rule 5 pick (and subsequent keeping on a major league roster) is representative of the arrogance/ignorance of our front office. It didn't matter what his #s showed, they had some 80 year old that saw him strike out the side one time, and they were gonna show all those naysayers that they can find true talent.

yeah no kidding. not only did he completely waste a 25-man roster spot for the better part of a season, but then he took playing time from guys in A ball so he could continue to prove that he was a terrible pitcher.

Patton should've been released after 2009, but to say that the Rule 5 pick showed arrogance/ignorance on our front office's part ... I think that's probably a bit of a stretch. The thing is, Patton was a semi-intriguing arm in 2008 with the Rockies. He posted fairly solid numbers in A+ (10+ K rate, mid 3 walk rate). Sure, he was a bit older, but he also came armed with a fastball that peaked in the mid-upper 90's and a good breaking ball. It was an intriguing gamble to find pen help at a low cost.

The problem is, his stuff collapsed with us, and his arm seemingly was never as good as it was in the Rockies system.

Released: OF Albert Hernandez

I mildly remember a time when I was intrigued with Hernandez, as he always posted decent-good DSL numbers. That said, IIRC, minimal power potential for a corner guy, so eh.

Interesting note (which a lot of you already knew) from Matt Eddy (BA):

Update: The Cubs agreed to nearly triple fifth-rounder Matt Szczur's bonus amount when he punted football and committed to baseball full time in January. The two parties finalized contract parameters on March 18, with the Cubs deciding the best course of action was to first release and then re-sign Szczur to a new minor league contract. In so inking a second minor league pact with Szczur, they triggered a contract provision that effectively morphs the agreement into a major league deal this winter.

Some have said that he will have four option years instead of three (similar to Samardzija). Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald is looking into it and will report on it soon.

Szczur officially signed his new contract on March 18. After consulting the commissioner's office, the Cubs determined that the cleanest way to alter Szczur's bonus amount was to first release and then re-sign him to a new minor league deal. By signing him to a second contract, however, the Cubs triggered a provision that will make Szczur eligible for December's major league Rule 5 draft—but only if he's not a member of Chicago's 40-man roster.

That scenario seems unlikely, given how well Szczur played during last summer's pro debut and how much money and energy the Cubs have invested in him. In all likelihood, Chicago will add Szczur to its 40-man roster in November in order to shield him from the Rule 5 draft.

According to agent Rex Gary, Szczur increased his profile in both baseball and football in the eight months since his selection by the Cubs.

"Matt quickly surpassed what a lot of people thought was his performance level," Gary said. "He played so well that the Cubs realized that they not only had a good player, but they potentially had a special player." Gary also emphasized that Szczur's pro debut, in which he collected a hit in his first 21 pro games and batted .347/.414/.465 while reaching low Class A Peoria, was even more impressive in light of a two-month layoff before signing.

The Cubs plan to send the 21-year-old Szczur to Peoria to begin his first full season as a baseball player.

The Cubs have released a number of players from Minor League Camp over the past few days, including RHPs Steve Grife, Corey Martin, Mike Parisi, and Carlos Rojas, INF Jake McAloose, 1B-OF T. J. Baxter, and OF Cody Shields.
Q-MAN: And if Matt Szczur is indeed added to the Cubs 40-man roster post-2011 (as would seem a near-certainty at this point), he will get four minor league options 2012-15, as long as the 4th and final one is used prior to completing five "full seasons."

For example, Rafael Dolis gets a 4th minor league option (as of right now) because while he did use an option last season, he has accrued only two "full seasons" (2009 at Daytona and 2010 at Daytona and Tennessee), which means the earliest he can accrue five full seasons is after the 2013 season (the 4th option is good for the entire season even if the player accrues enough time to hit five full seasons before the end of that season), so he was optioned in 2010 (option #1), he has been optioned this year (option #2), and he can be optioned to the minors in 2012 (option #3) and 2013 (option #4). But if he spends the 2013 season (for example) on the Cubs MLB 25-man roster and does not use an option that year, then the 4th option would not be available in 2014 because he would have already accrued five "full seasons" before he had a chance to use the 4th option.

Let's say a couple of Cubs outfielders get hurt and the Cubs bring up Brett Jackson for a month sometime this season, and then option him to the minors, he would get a 4th minor league option because he has accrued only one "full season" through the 2010 season.
