there isn't a team in the league that can beat them the way they played tonight

Pheonix was rather flat tonight and honestly they played above their heads all year and it was just a matter of time before they gave out...I am not sure that San Jose, Chicago, or Vancouver could be dominated like that even if they were flat.

Question for those who watched the game...when Fiddler scored on the face-off, did that puck touch the ice or did he hit it out of the air as it was dropped?

It appeared to me Fiddler timed it perfectly, as soon as the puck hit the ice he wacked it between Datsuyk and Howard' legs. The Wings were amazing last night, third period was a throw away however, by then, the Coyotes had clearly given up.

halak is going to be a legend if they win this game. i don't think i've seen anything like this.

you haven't? this happens almost every playoffs, a goalie plays out of his mind and keeps his team closer to the superior team than they should be. just off the top of my head, there was j-s giguere in 2003, kiprusoff in 2004, cam ward in 2006, hasek in 1999, roy in 1993 and hextall in 1987. and those are just the guys who got their team all the way to the finals.

i know tht goalies stand on their head. i just havent seen any of them play the way halak has played for the last 4+ periods. giguere was the one i was going to say was close.

Round 2 schedules. Lots and lots of night hockey in the West that I will be watching.

yeah, it's crazy how much better the west matchups are than the east.

if montreal wins tonight, the pens will be the only team left in the east that would have even made the playoffs in the western conference.

man i wish we played in the east.

wow, just about everybody in this thread is seriously selling the Wings short. they have to be the favorites in any series from here on out, barring injury to any of the big three.

Please explain how you come to the conclusion that the 5th place team in the conference is the favorite over the 3 teams above them that made it to the 2nd round? Not to mention whatever team makes it to the the Finals from the east.

their depth was pretty decimated by injuries for much of the year, and it took 1/3 the season to move away from Osgood, and Filpulla's emergence has made them a completely different team

i definitely wouldn't have made that statement earlier in the year. nonetheless, it's foolish to bet against Zetterberg, Lidstrom and Datsyuk in the playoffs.

the red wings are the best team in the west only if you've been living in a cave for a year. jimmy howard is average at best. their top defense pairing is a combined 76 years old and neither guy is as good as he once was. their third D pairing is pretty weak, cleary and bertizzi on a second line isn't going to scare anyone and their third and fourth lines are pretty meh. they're a good team but the sharks, wings and canucks are more talented IMO. (as well as the pens and caps)

wait, your argument is that i somehow don't have enough exposure to the Wings to evaluate them? Howard was top 5 in the NHL for SV% and GAA, fwiw

man washington just looks lousy. no sustained pressure, too many shots into the montreal D-men from outside. halak has made a few good saves but he hasn't really had to be that great. montreal is playing really good defense and washington doesn't seem to know what the hell to do about it. they really need to get some good play along the boards and start to cycle, but they're not really that type of team.

That's insane that Detroit not only has 1 days rest between finishing their 1st round and starting the second round, but they have 1 day notice of a scheduled game. Meanwhile, the Hawks have been done since Monday, and the Canucks since Sunday, and they are starting their series 2 days later. I know SJ has been off the longest, but that's a bit strange.

no, my argument is that you're wrong about the wings being the best team left in the playoffs. also you're a wings fan so that might be hurting your ability to see this objectively.

howard's stats are good because the wings always play a really good defensive system. osgood always had good stats and he was never that great.

bad call

i don't think so. though break, but i think thats the right call. maybe you dont call that in the playoffs though

yeah, it was the right call, but like you said, one you don't make in the playoffs

they've made that call a few times in the playoffs. i think they make it because they think there's interference but they don't have the balls to call a penalty.

in 13 years with the Wings, Osgood never even approached the SV% Howard had this year. irrespective of that, whichever you give credit to (great team defense or great goalie), it helps my point that they're the favorites right now
