“You see guys like Jermaine Dye(notes) without a job,” Minnesota Twins second baseman Orlando Hudson(notes) said Monday. “Guy with [27 home runs and 81 RBIs] and can’t get a job. Pretty much sums it up right there, no? You’ve got some guys who miss a year who can come back and get $5, $6 million, and a guy like Jermaine Dye can’t get a job. A guy like Gary Sheffield(notes), a first-ballot Hall of Famer, can’t get a job. …

“We both know what it is. You’ll get it right. You’ll figure it out. I’m not gonna say it because then I’ll be in [trouble].”

“Call it what you want to,” Hudson said. “I ain’t fit to say it. After I retire I’ll say it. I’ve got a whole bunch of stuff to say after I retire.”

pretty annoying

Jermaine Dye can't get a job cause he's a (probably not very good) DH who wants too much money and the promise of being a starter.

Gary Sheffield can't get a job cause he's a miserable prick whose upside is ok DH.

That's not to say subtle racism doesn't exist, but it's more about the guys who've always sucked than the guys who were good and fell off a cliff. White guys are grinders, black guys are athletes.

This is just Hudson venting that he get left out in the cold(again) a season after he barely made more than Aaron Miles.

almost sounds like a Iverson rant.

And because he's like 45 years old.

If you are going to go to the public claiming racism, at least do your research.

FWIW, the Cubs (the most racist organization and fanbase EVAR!) were willing to sign Dye but he wanted to be a guaranteed starter. I don't doubt that there is some level of racism out there just like there are unfortunately in all walks of life. But even if someone is a closet racist, I am sure that winning baseball games in order to make more money and keep their job is more important than slighting a good black baseball player.

If Hudson wanted to claim racism, he should have maybe looked into how players advance through the minor league system where player skills are a lot less obvious and maybe inherent racism would cause a minority to get held back while a slightly less qualified white person gets advanced to the next level. That's taking a big leap, but it would seem more reasonable that racism would be found there more often than at the major league GM level when deciding between FAs.

the obvious counterpoint to this is worthless scrubs like Corey Patterson and Willy Taveras that keep getting signed by teams despite being thoroughly god awful

I can't remember which feed I was reading, but they pointed out that Dye and Sheffield are the only black players of the 29 unsigned FA's.

Is this asshat serious? Did nobody tell the O Dogg about the 3 mil that Dye turned down from the Cubs because he wouldnt get enough playing time or the 4 mil he turned down from the Nats because it wasnt enough to uproot his family, not to mention the reported multiple deals in the 1 mil neighborhood he turned down? Basically, major league baseballs racist because nobody wants to offer a declining 36 year old a multi year deal near home and a starting job.

Guys in their late 30's are no longer in demand. Jim Thome took a 1 year deal with a limited role. Jim Edmonds took a minor league deal with an invite. When your old and on the decline, you cant be picky. Race doesnt enter into it.

I don't think he's talking about age. If you look at the articles that are being written about Hudson's comments, most everyone is saying it is a strong hint at racism.

Maybe I should have colored my comments green.

Yea I was wondering why he thought you were serious.

This sums it up quite well for me. If Dye doesnt think 4 mil is enough for him then I'm afraid he's just unofficially retired from the game of baseball and doesnt know it yet.

Dye and Sheffield are terrible examples as far as racism goes. However, when was the last time you saw a non white player described as "gritty", "blue collar" or "playing the game the right way"?

How much is Jim Thome getting this year? I would think that he is pretty close to the white version of Jermaine Dye. Thome with incentives could make about $2.5 million. Dye has already been offered that.

Juan Pierre, this season.

"Hardest working player on the team"

"First at the ballpark, last to leave"

etc. etc.

If I didn't know better, I'd think you've read Nolan Richardson's recently released bio.
