This made me laugh.

To sum it up Denard Span hit a hard foul ball and it just so happened to hit his own mother. I can't remember this type of thing ever happening before.

I know one time there was a poor older woman in the 50's or 60's who took her two grandsons to either a Phillies or A's game. She was struck by a foul ball and had to be taken out on a gurney. As they're wheeling her out, she got hit again by another foul ball.

That may top Span hitting his own mother.

Now he's calling for an expansion of protective netting...

I understand that a freak occurrence happened to his mother and all, but if that line drive hit some random guy who didn't get seriously injured by it, which happens more often than someone getting seriously injured, he wouldn't be making a big deal out of it.

Not that I'm against the idea, but the guy is obviously stirred up by what happened and I think he's overreacting a bit. He doesn't hit that foul ball, people move on with their lives and this isn't a story

I personally don't like sitting behind netting. I find it annoying and it makes it hard to read the pitches. It also makes it near impossible to get a ball. Pay attention the the game or live with the consequences.

People are always like that -- like celebrities who start charities for weird diseases because their kid/mom/dad/friend is affected

yeah this was pretty hilarious, you know, now that I know she's alright.

As for the netting, it might take away from the game a little bit but I do think it needs to be extended out further. At least to the dugout (that'd only be another few feet anyway) if not at least half-way through the dugout. Some of those line drives come in there so fast it doesn't matter if you're paying attention or not. Particularly if you don't have the best reflexes.

Yeah, like Derrek Lee. Major tool, definitely an overreaction on his part.

Yes, because that's exactly what he said, that it was an overreaction to do that. In fact, your example is a prime example.
