Hooray for reckless abandon!

This is the only time where you can work on it in a game situation without the chance of some real negative consequences. Bravo for using spring training time wisely

the problem is it probably won't stop when the regular season starts

so, the reason for not practicing something in spring training is that your manager is deranged and can't stop doing something once he's started it? how much of a caricature do we need to create?

what are you even talking about?

the cubs (mostly because of lou) ran into wayyy too many outs on the basepaths last season. so when they start off the next spring training by telling players to be even MORE aggressive, it's pretty clear where lou's plans are headed.

i don't think it's clear where lou's plans are headed after a few spring training games

Maybe - but no sense in practicing a philosophy for a few games and then ditching it. It indicates where Lou's head is right now.

Yeah, unless you are just practicing/working on it because its a spring training game, or trying to see what your team can give you (my point earlier in the thread). The way I see it, the goal of ST games is to see what your team is capable of and can give you, while the goal of of regular season games is to win. So, really, one shouldn't affect the other unless there is some wild success.

If they are really hammering it into these guys heads to be more aggressive this spring, then it's hard to say it's just spring training thing and will but shut off when the regular season begins. If you spend the spring always trying for the extra base, is it all that easy to show up in April realizing, "wait, now is the time for real baseball I will be more cautious."

I don't have time to find a link right now but someone recently researched the cost/benefit of going for the extra base.

The benefit overwhelmed the cost. The only reason coaches don't send more people is because the negative reaction is so much stronger than the positive reaction.

i'd like to read it, considering all the other research shows that it's not worth the risk.

IIRC, it was PizzaCutter and it was with respect to sending the runner home.

Edit: http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/sending_the_runner_home_from_3b/ found the link to the link.

Any play at the plate obviously involves the 3rd base coach or running thru the sign as far as poor decisions with being out at the plate which basically eliminates most runner aggressiveness in regards to the plate.

I don't see the big deal about this...

If you're against them being aggressive at the plate, this helps your cause.

It's ST as runners are working in technique for better jumps/rounding bases, reading pitchers, & measuring the depth when the OF'ers get to the ball (without in-depth reports on minor leaguers).

On top of that, in front of their evaluators they're making poor decisions in meaningless games possibly hurting their chances of being advanced or having the green light once the reg. season starts. There is no better way to become a station to station team than run yourself into outs early on espec. with someone like Piniella.

With that said, I'd rather have a player that needs to be toned down rather than one that needs to be motivated by a manager to become more aggressive.
