That's one hell of a pull. That's the allure of baseball card collecting nowadays. Back in the 90's you never pulled a card worth $10,000. These low print runs really jack the prices up, and turns a hobby into a profession.

Yea imagine the guy who pulls that Longoria card. Hard to believe nobody has pulled it yet

Baseball card collecting was one of my favorite things about being 10 years old. My prized possession was an Andre Dawson 1980 Topps card when he was with the Expos. I'm sure it's not worth double-digits now, but it has a lot of sentimental value to me.

I also have a Willie Mays Topps card from when he was with the Mets. That was really the only one i could afford. Haven't bought a pack of cards in probably 10 years or so, though.

Officially starting at home vs. Pittsburgh on Tuesday

Many of us are hoping Lincoln comes up to face him.

Posted
I hope he gets lit up big time!!!
Why?

Yeah for real. I hope he strikes out all 27 batters on 3 pitches each.

Here's a thought... of all the pitchers out there today, would it be safe to say that Strasburg represents the best chance for a pitcher to match and/or surpass the 20K in a single game mark at some point in his career?

Just an odd baseball trivia question here, but I'm curious to know when was the last game in which both starting pitchers were making their Major League debuts.

i think Scherzer could, if he were more economical

it'd be interesting to see what our closer could do K-wise with 7 or 8 innings of work, not that i'm necessarily advocating that

I would argue that between him and Lincecum its almost a tie.

I would love to see you expound on this.

Strasburg has just as good if not the best chance out there of being the next 20k pitcher. Especially while hes still so young and explosive, eg. Kerry Wood. I'm no mathematician, but the chances of either of them throwing a 20k game is still basically nil. Its just so rare. In that way, I suppose you could call them almost tied.

In other words, let's say Strasburg has the best chance, what could that chance quantitatively be? And how significant of an increase could it be against other high K/9 pitchers? You're dealing with a pretty random event here, in spite of being in the elite category of pitchers who have the best chances of doing it.

Although what do I know, Clemens managed to do it twice.

It seems pretty simple, it's an extremely rare feat for someone to strike out 20 batters through 9 innings. For someone to strike out 21 would be even more amazing. Regardless of a particular pitches skill set, the chances between two elite pitchers are pretty much a tie as it is. You can give the slight edge to Strasburg because he is young and throws 100 mph, but I think that edge is also negated by the fact that we really can't be sure what his future will look like, where as we can for Lincecum.

so basically, a dumbed down version of what the guy above you said

Do you contribute anything to stimulate discussion here other than insults and jabs at other posters?

Very much so. We just had a riveting discussion in the Armando Gaalragga thread in this very subforum. I was very much a part of that discussion. Very few agreed with me, but there were no insults or jabs at other posters. Discussion was certainly stimulated.

Thanks for playing, though.
