Castro will begin the season with Iowa even if Blanco isn't ready by opening day.

Color me slightly shocked that they're not gonna start him in AA. I know he held his own there last year, but that was a rather small sampling. Either way I'm pleased he's shown enough poise that the team has faith in him to start the season at the highest level he can get to in the minors

That could have just been Lou saying Castro won't be in Chicago, and tossing out Iowa without actually knowing which minor league level Castro would start out at.

Kyung-Min Na could not start the season with the Cubs and might spend this season at school in Korea:

One other item ref Minor League Camp....

I cannot confirm at this time, but 17-year old OF Kyung-Min Na (called the "fastest HS player in Korea" when the Cubs signed him for $725K last year) might have been placed on the Restricted List while he is attending school back home in South Korea. He was at Instructs at Fitch Park last fall, however, with fellow Koreans RHP Dae-Eun Rhee, SS Hak-Ju Lee, Catcher (ex-OF) Jae-Hoon Ha, and OF Dong-Yub Kim. (RHP Su-Min Jung was the only one of the Cubs Korean prospects who did not participate in the 2009 AZ Instructional League, and that was because he went back to South Korea in August to attend college)

anyone take a note of AzPhil's rosters for AA/AAA today? Granted, a lot of work to do, but what stood out, besides Brett and Josh in AA, was Kyler on the AA roster, along with Marquez Smith and Kevin Soto (and Luis Flores).

Granted, a lot of time to go.

I was stunned to see Dwayne Kemp on the Daytona roster. That doesn't make much sense, imho.

Seems like many aggressive promotions for the Cubs, if these rosters hold up. Carpenter and J. Jackson in AAA. Huseby, Archer, D.J. Lemahieu and Jackson skipping Daytona.

Not surprised to see H. Lee in Daytona, hopefully he will thrive like Castro did.

Most of these guys will shift down a level in the days right before the season starts. Seems to happen every year. Obviously a few will stay at the higher level (a la Castro and Guyer last season), but Vitters was with Daytona till nearly the end of minor league camp.

I'm not seeing this roster. Are you referring to one he posted on 3/14, http://www.thecubreporter.com/2010/03/14/minor-league-camp-roster-update

or has he posted a newer one somewhere?

At that time, they still had over 50 guys in big-league camp. When about 25 of them go down, that's basically a full team worth, so most guys can shift down a level after that.

Or has he posted another one since Sunday? Perhaps so, since in his Sunday roster he had Huseby on Daytona, but CUBZ99 makes reference to Huseby being listed on Tenn...

As cal notes, these things always change, a lot.

About the only certain thing is that when a player is optioned down from the big league squad, they're almost always optioned to the team they will play at.

I'm at Fitch right now. Archer is pitching for the AA squad (I think) against the Angels. He just walked a guy (I know, shocker). And now he struck out a guy. Looking for a radar gun.

Kyler Burke is at first base. Luis Flores catching. Two guys have stolen bases off him in 2 minutes. Josh Vitters at third.

While I saw Archer, he threw 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K. Two guys on base are his responsibility. Alberto Cabrera now is in. And he gets out of the jam with a flyout.

LaMahieu is at shortstop. More positions as I see them. I'll try to get pics or video.

Drew Rundle said he'll likely head to Boise as a pitcher.

Ryan Flaherty is at 2b. He just got picked off. Kevin Soto is in the LF.

At AAA, ABD is pitching for AAA. I saw Clevenger, Smaily Borges and Canzler headed out on the field.

Cabrera with a quick 1-2-3 inning with 2 Ks.

Dae-Eun Rhee is apparently the bat boy. Marquez Smith just smoked a single to LF. Kyler Burke with a liner to LCF. Brett Jackson is now up. He grounded out 4-3.

Apparent lineup:

1B Kyler Burke

2B Ryan Flaherty

SS DJ LeMahieu

3B Josh Vitters

LF Kevin Soto

CF Brett Jackson

RF Mysterious #2 who has led off each of the last 2 innings

DH Marquez Smith

Cabrera looks real good.

2.1 IP, 1 H (gave up a massive triple), 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.

Vitters is up after mysterious #2. He's a lefty who I don't recognize. Vitters grounded out 6-3 on a 2-2 pitch.

Jason James is up to bat.

Oswaldo Martinez pitching for AAA. Josh Whitlock now in for AA.

I think Greg Maddux is in the AAA dugout. Got a pic of him sitting next to Ryno. Yes, I'm a stalker.

Kyung-Min Na is in at CF and Arismendy Alcantara is at 2B for the AAA guys.

I think the AA guys have hit around this inning. Brett Jackson smacked a double. Countless line singles and doubles here.

as i noted, things will change. i was just referencing the game lineups from a few days back. found it interesting that kyler was at aa as i hadn't followed the spring all that closely.

So, perusing TCR, Arizona Phil said that the guy who wore #2 and led off every inning for the AA squad today is none other than Wagner Mateo (the Dominican outfielder who signed with the Cardinals for $3.1 million but failed his physical). Apparently he also did some pre-game BP. I'd imagine the Cubs are rather interested in signing him.

I have some pics and will post later today.

I know it's just minor league spring training, but I find it extremely fascinating that these guys are getting opportunities like this at such a young age. I would think they would only be running drills. I guess it makes sense for Na since he they may be squeezing in as much baseball as possible before he goes back to school. I guess Alcantara has been making his name known.

Az Phil, with his comments on

a) Wagner Mateo,

b) yesterday's Fitch action

c) his listing of what the current rosters are. (Again, most guys will drop a level once the extras at the higher levels go down.)

d) His "Limited Activity Only – injury rehab" guys, which include:

Chris Carpenter

Justin Bristow

Dylan Johnston

Marcus Hatley (TJ)

Casey Lambert (TJ)

Thoughts:

1. Disappointed that Carpenter and Bristow are hurt, again.

2. Cal, if you have a chance to ask anybody, please ask about Carpenter and Bristow and what's up? Insignificant short-term thing, bumped a toe last week and will be back on Tuesday? Versus something serious, or surgery rehab, or whatever? bristow was a possible emergence candidate, so if his arm is bad again, that's disappointing. Carpenter obviously is also one of our premium pitching prospects; if his arm is bad yet again, that would be really, really, really disappointing. (As has been Cashner's super-wild spring.)

3. Do we ever know what is up with Dylan Johnston? He switched to pitcher ages ago, it seemed. Given that he wasn't a pitcher, was the wildest wildarm from SS in recent memory, and has been hurt for ages now, I wonder how long they can stick with him as a longest-of-long-shots in the first place?

4. I don't remember; had we know that Lambert had TJ? I'd like to hope that he may have been pitching with problems for a while, and that if he were to come back with an actually healthier and stronger arm, perhaps he'll get back into worth-watching again?

5. Phil was really gushing on Cabrera, "dominating". Cal, at this point are these guys just throwing fastballs, and his was very fast? Or was he working some offspeed in, too?
