"I think a change would've been good for the Cubs," said Beckert, who lives in Englewood, Fla., 60 miles north of Naples. "I know the people in Mesa won't like to hear that, but Florida produces a lot of world champions, and the Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908 and haven't been in a World Series since 1945. The fishing down there is great, too. I and my old roommate Ron Santo are closing in on 70, and we'd would like to go out knowing the Cubs at least made it to the World Series."

So THAT is why the Cubs haven't won a World Series in over 100 years. I never knew. Replace Crane Kenney & Co. with Beckert immediately. He knows what we need to win it all.

alzheimer's makes you forget things, not say stupid things. maybe you wanted to go with dementia?

It's a form of dementia, and doesn more than make you forget things, including causing you to say things that seem quite stupid.

The thread title is a bit tactless.

Whether you agree with him or not, Beckert's entitled to his opinion without having his sanity questioned. From a purely superstitious standpoint, it's a far cry from some of the rituals I've seen expressed here.

I take his comments as saying that the Cubs need to shake things up, since 63 years of relative consistency haven't produced much. I also sense that he's being tongue-in-cheek, what with the fishing reference and the fact that he lives nearby.

So if it was up to glenn we would also have a lucky rabbits foot hung in every locker

You got that from that paragraph? Amazing.

The guy is 70 years old and just wanted to talk about fishing. I don't think he was seriously advocating that the Cubs should move to Florida because it will make them a better team.

Great thread though.
