Now that Byrd is officially a Cub, let's take a look at his stats compared to that other guy the Cubs got from Texas after a career year.

2009- hit 20 HR's, 6 on the road, 14 at home. Milton Bradley had 22 HR's in his final season in Texas, 16 at home, 6 on the road. Byrd posted a 329 OBP (down drom 380 in 08), Bradley's OBP during his final season in Texas was 436, his OBP with the Cubs in 2009 was .378.

2007-9 Road stats: 328 OBP, 15 HR, 91 RBI, 39 BB, 127Ks in 684 ABs.

The 2009 Baseball Prospectus refers to him as a good "fourth outfielder." They rate him as a slightly below average fielder. He is, on the plus side, half the price Hendy paid for Bradley for what that's worth. And there is no indication he's a clubhouse cancer, as Bradley was.

That's because he's 2010 speak for Reed Johnson

This part bothers me, especially considering we already have a below average left fielder. It could be a bumpy 2010.

UZR has him pretty much exactly average in center. For his career, UZR/150 has him at 0.0. Last year he was at -2.8, but the two years before that he was at 10.6 and 10.9. So UZR disagrees with that assesment slightly and there's room for him to be above average.

Has anyone seen much of him in center? From the little bit that I've seen, he never looked particularly impressive out there.

Another interesting tidbit that I saw on Bruce's blog, his numbe #1 comp on baseball reference is Reed Johnson

Similarity scores are garbage, and that particular comp is based on their full careers, rather than by age.

My biggest question with Marlon Byrd is his CF defense. He looks pretty big for a center fielder and I question his speed. I know UZR pegs him at dead average but I'm curious what other metrics have to say about him. I'm also curious as to his raw skills, such as depth perception, speed, arm strength and accuracy. I've personally seen very little of him so I can't judge. If anyone has seen any amount of OF play from him I'd be interested to hear their analysis.

The Cubs will finish below .500. It won't be bumpy; it'll just be down.

If you're serious I'd take that bet.

I live in DFW and watch a lot of Rangers games. IMO Byrd is solid in the outfield; not outstanding but solid. I would agree w/ anyone that says he plays an average CF. To me, he is Reed Johnson w/out the flashy web gems but also w/out the health concerns.

I live in DFW and don't watch a lot of Rangers games, but I remember seeing him make a few nice diving catches. Then again, I've seen Sosa make a few of those as well so I guess that doesn't mean much.

Jim Edmonds dove on 82.6% of the balls he caught.

How do we do this? I suppose I get some odds, no?

I couldn't care less if he looks impressive out there so long as he's getting it done.
