of course Gammons is a Red Sox homer, but there was a very good article on BP the other day which stated that more or less places like Baseball Prospectus wouldn't exist today without Gammons. Probably a tad overstated, but Gammons has always had an open mind to things, and embraced stats before there was an Olney or Stark.

I agree with the sentiment, but you aren't putting Stark out there as some sort of progressive thinker on stats are you? He's about as old school as it gets, and his stats obsession is centered around the quirky and coincidental much more than what stats tells us about the game.

he's the best red sox guy around. he's followed them in some capacity for like 90 percent of his career, and now he has a chance to cash a check for following them directly. he's free of ESPN, why wouldn't he work for the team he's covered his whole career now that he has the chance?

i cant believe im arguing with a 12 year old

I never even said I was annoyed by it... good god - totally unnecessary name-calling.

That's just the IMB way. He's grouchy because he didn't have his nap.

Not sure why Gammons should get any crap for having a Red Sox bias. He grew up near Boston and has covered the team for like 40 years.

If any of you worked for the Tribune for 40 years on the Cubs beat and then wound up on ESPN, you'd act the same way about the Cubs.

Gammons is awesome.

You are supposed to give up that bias when you become a journalist, at least in your work.

He covered the Red Sox. That was his specialty. He's not Chris Berman cheering on the Buffalo Bills.

I never picked up any bias toward any team from Gammons. I think sometimes people see things that aren't there.

The guy was nearly in tears over Nick Swisher striking out Gabe Kapler.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Is this a joke?

When the Yankees were getting blown out by the Rays this year, Swisher pitched an inning and struck out Kapler. Swisher asked for the ball and Gammons threw a hissy fit on baseball tonight about it, saying Swisher would be lucky to be half as remembered as Gabe Kapler when his career was over. It was embarrassing.

So how is that showing a bias toward a team? B/c Kapler once played briefly with the Red Sox?

I don't understand your reasoning at all.

Anti-Yankee bias, and yes Kapler is beloved Red Sock for reasons I don't quite understand.

remember when nick swisher struck out kapler last season and gammons freaked out about it on bbtn? they showed some of the yankees laughing and peter said something ridiculous like "they can laugh all they want but none of them will achieve in life what gabe kapler has".

he may be a red sox fan, but he reports on the red sox more than anyone because he knows them better than anyone. sao paolantonio is an eagles reporter who lives in the philly area; espn has him cover the eagles because when he's not reporting on the eagles for espn he's reporting on the eagles for local stations.

gammons is in his 60s and just had an aneurysm, it makes sense that he's going to shift to a job that involves less hours and less travel, and cover a team that he knows and roots for.

in case anyone missed his "goodbye" from espn, here it is: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=gammons_peter&id=4734773

As far as I'm concerned this is the only thing Gabe Kapler has contributed in his life that has been worth a damn:

Untrue. His wife has kind of a Sarah Silverman thing going on and his kids are cute.

Yeah, that chick is a lot hotter than Sarah Silverman.

When he was with the Rangers he was one of the most popular players in DFW only because every woman here was in love with him.
