15 New faces, including Edgar DH Martinez, Barry Larkin, "Spittin" Roberto Alomar, Kevin Appier, Todd Zeile, our good buddy Eric Karros, and the great Shane Reynolds. The First three will be seriously considered, but maybe one will get in.

 

Tim Raines would be nice to see in the Hall, but he'll need several years to build momentum.

 

David Segui is out of place on this list.

The Edgar Martinez vote is going to be crucial

I don't think Edgar Martinez gets in for a while. Voters will look at him, see that he was perhaps the third best player on the Mariners for much of his time there, overshadowed at times by Griffey, the Unit, and Arod. Add in that he was a DH and those teams underacchieved their front line talent, and there are too many black marks.

 

Hell of a hitter though, he should get in eventually.

Maybe personally you feel that way, but there's no way he isn't a first ballot guy given what voters look at: He's extremely popular in the baseball community, a MVP award, multiple gold gloves at SS, nearly a career .300 hitter, 12 All-Star games. He's a lock.

Ironically, he won the MVP in 1995, but finished 12th in the voting in 1996 (for a season that was far, far better)

Milestone stats don't always matter. Larkin has pretty much every single intangible (non-milestonish types of things) that get people into the hall. I forgot to add on my previous list the fact that he played his whole career with one team, which is something that voters (strangely imo) look at.

 

In my opinion, we don't to wait and see how the vote goes. He's a lock with the voters.

 

Personally, I'm up in the air about him. I could be convinced either way with good arguments.

The DH to me is like voting for a non-kicker/punter ST's player in the NFL. Were they really good at that particular part of the game? Of course but every HOFer and even many non-HOFer's would have been just as good or better if they got to play on ST's/DH. Imagine what Griffey could have done if he didn't have to play the field once he go to Cinci or Bonds once his knee started to fail. Every pretty good hitter could have done as well or better than Martinez if they got to play only DH just as Ray Lewis would dominate if he played ST's.

not at all. there's been plenty of full time dh's who don't come close to approaching edgar's production.

I agree, I think both Trammell and Larkin are HOF worthy. I just wonder if some more recent SS's offensive numbers have hindered them getting into the Hall. I think one thing that will help Larkin over Trammell is that Larkin was considered the best SS in the NL for much of his career. Trammell was never considered to be nearly as good as Ripken.

sadly, larkin has a decent shot at getting in on the first ballot while trammell is getting 1/4 of the vote every year. in reality they were both very good players who probably deserve an equal shot at the hall.
