Lee @ 63 is pretty unexpected

Not really, maybe higher than expected, but KG loves tools. In the chat he is doing right now, he just said he thinks Castro is more polished, but that he thinks Lee has better tools.

from what i've read about each guy from BA and a few other sources, this is a very defensible position. lee is unquestionably faster and has a higher ceiling as a fielder because he has a better arm and more range (but he makes a lot of errors). the only area that castro would seem to have the edge as far as tools is in his potential to develop power.

Castro makes a lot more contact, also.

Kevin Goldstein has his system rankings up now. The Cubs come in at #8, which I have to think is slightly higher than many on here would have guessed.

Here is what he had to say about the Cubs:

8. Chicago Cubs

Last Year’s Ranking: 26

Why They Are Here: As bad a year as the Cubs had at the big-league level, that's how good a year they had down on the farm, as 2008 draftees stepped forward, international signees shined, and plenty of others stepped forward. Throw in a first-round draft steal in Brett Jackson, and things are looking very, very up.

Where They Will Be Next Year: Chances are good that all of these players should still be eligible next year, and while I don't see the true star potential in Starlin Castro that others do, it's reasonable to expect good performances from Josh Vitters and Hak-Ju Lee. The aging big-league team needs help now, but this might take awhile.

Since the Cubs were okay but disappointing, does this mean their year on the farm was just suprisingly not as bad as it could have been?

I live in the La Crosse, Wisconsin area and Brett Jackson and Mike Brenly were teammates in 2007 in the Northwoods League (wooden bat summer league) in La Crosse. I had season tickets at the time so I got to see them play quite a bit. At the time, Brenly struck me as an offensive minded C and I was not very impressed with his defensive ability. I am guessing that his defense has improved.

I was pretty impressed with Jackson as he seemed like a good all-around player (speed, defense, batting average, power). He played mainly CF and did a pretty good job. Here is an article written from the La Crosse Logger perspective: http://www.lacrosseloggers.com/content/team/team_news?news_id=329

not sure if it's been mentioned, but i found the most recent ask ba to be mildly interesting. they listed the top guys who were left off, ranked by number of ballots they were on, and they added the highest ranking on said ballot. As we know from Glassey's comments, Conor and Callis had Lee on, and the highest rank for Lee was 75th (too high IMO). I found it interesting that Carpenter got two votes (highest was 120) and Logan Watkins got one (149th).
