i [expletive] hate football because none of this [expletive] ever happens to any other team. [expletive] it.

I mean, the Lions went 0-16 last year.

yeah, but detroit has other sports.

They also have Detroit.

Here's a question for you Chicago guys:

Do you guys get the sense that the Bears are not viewed as a flagship organization outside of the Chicago area? Meaning, do you think their national presence (for lack of a better word) is commensurate with the city they play in, the history of the team, and the local support?

I think it's pretty telling of the ownership that the Bears are not put on the same level as the Giants, Steelers, Cowboys, Redskins, Patriots, Packers, etc. as football brands.

It's telling of one thing: all those teams show up in the Super Bowl or close much more consistently than the Bears.

When the Bears are winners there's plenty of support. But too often they are a disappointment and that's your reason why other teams have stronger brands.

I'm trying to imagine a santo-equivalent broadcaster doing this game and the Cincinnati game

The broadcasters would be discussing how much their cats hate them, the mechanics of water-proof khakis, and why Anquan Boldin has such a goofy name.

Frankly, it'd be a nice change of pace from Buck and Aikman.

Root canal is a nice change of pace from Buck and Aikman, no?

Yeah, that plays a part obviously. Even in 2006 though I honestly thought the Bears were kind of a nondescript franchise to the average NFL fan. The Bears are in the top 10 in many of the valuation metrics but they're not where you'd expect the team in the biggest unshared NFL market to be.

I really want to hear some moron Bear fan try to pin THIS one on Cutler in some way, shape, or form.

Someone will try it.

It's an interesting question. I think they are more or less middle of the road in terms of national exposure, propped up only because of their history (pre-1970) and market (3rd largest in the country) and on a smaller scale, the 85 team (which probably left a longer lasting image than any title team in the SB era).

But in terms of day to day exposure, the Bears have been under marketed in their city and nationally for some time (who can remember seeing a Bears commercial on TV before last season?), and have not been able to put together a 3+ year span of competitive teams which has caused them to dip behind teams like Dallas, Philly, Washington, Green Bay, New England, Pittsburgh in terms of franchise prestige. Assuming they don't make the playoffs this year, they will have made the playoffs just 4 times in the last 18 years (94, 01, 05, 06). And in many of the other years they haven't come close to contending (92, 93, 96, 97, 98, 99, 00, 02, 03, 04, 07, likely 09). So it's hard to stay on the first half hour of sportscenter when you are a boring team that loses a lot.
