I wouldn't be surprised if he became available but i also dont expect the Cubs to go after him. I'm little annoyed by it but the cubs have this unconditional love for Larry Rothchild.

I've complained about him from time to time but the pitching has held this team together for the past decade. They've been a mediocre (or worse) hitting teams in most years and the only thing that had them contending in 2003, 2004 and 2009 was solid pitching. Part of that is an organizational focus on ptiching, but he's done it with several different casts of characters and only one constant, Zambrano.

Just about the only pitching coach I'd consider over Rothschild is Duncan. Rothschild has been very good for the Cubs and very well deserving of staying for so long.

I still don't understand why so many people dislike Rothschild. The Cubs pitching is good pretty much every year.

I really don't get it either. He's been quite good in his time in Chicago.

It was Dusty's fault. Dusty was a terrible manager and misused pitchers badly and as a result their poor performances reflected badly upon Rothschild and he received a lot of heat IIRC when they brought him back after Dusty was gone. I think there's still some people who fail to remember that the pitching woes of 2004-2006 were largely in part due to Dusty's management of the pitching staff, not Rothschild's coaching ability. I was one of those people who was upset when Lou asked for Rothschild back. Then the Cubs pitching was really good in 07 and it was obvious that it wasn't Rotshschild who was to blame for the bad pitching in the year or two prior.

Dustty never wanted Larry in the first place; his preference would have been for Dick Pole to have been pitching coach instead of bench coach. Larry was basically forced on Dusty because he was in the middle of a multi-year contract (the only coach whose contract didn't expire at the end of the 2002 season). I remember reports that Dusty basically ignored what Larry had to say. He was really pitching coach in name only.

Wow. I never knew that part of it.

Yeah, that came out shortly after the Dusty regime ended. It's part of the reason I pretty much eliminated most - or all - of that period from my evaluation of Rothschild. And it should be pretty apparent, I would think, that he's better than that after how good he's been since Lou took over.

I am really scared that the Cubs are going to use the Jaramillo acquisition as the big name improvement to the team this offseason. I can't believe all the talk and hype about a freaking hitting coach.

I don't see any way that would work for the casual fan base. If they wanted a hitting coach to be a big name improvement it woulda been Sandberg

But he's unquestionably the best hitting coach in baseball!

Getting a new hitting coach and getting rid of Bradley might though. This story has been in every paper and on CSN for over a week now, and there's talk of making him the highest paid hitting coach in the league.

Getting rid of Bradley under the pretense of improving clubhouse chemistry I could see working on the average Cub fan(EVEN THERIOT SAID HE WAS CANCER). I think the average Cub fan would make fun of them spending money on a hitting coach. (These are grown men, making MILLIONS OF DOLLARS, and a coach is going to help them???)

It is the only Cubs news that there is to talk about at this point. If Jaramillo is signed, I think it is a big move by Hendry. Sure it isn't going to automatically turn the offense into a juggernaut, but it is a step in the right direction. Also, I would rather Hendry make a move like this and believe it is a fix, than seriously overpay another free agent so the team can get more "left handed" or a legitimate "lead off guy."

It's been interesting to read some of the speculation regarding the Cubs and hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo. On Monday, one scribe said the team had offered him $800,000 a year. Fact is, Jaramillo had yet to interview. He was waiting for a phone call Monday from GM Jim Hendry to set up a meeting. Also, Cubs Minor League roving hitting instructor Dave Keller has not talked to Hendry about the vacancy, as some have speculated. Keller and Hendry were in Arizona last week, but did not chat about the job.

There could be news this week once Hendry has a chance to meet with Jaramillo, 59, who opted to leave the Texas Rangers when that team refused to offer a multi-year deal. Another coach available is Carney Lansford, who was recently relieved of his duties by the Giants. His son, Josh, is a pitcher in the Cubs' Minor League system.

I hope Hendry hires Lansford after his affiliation with the Giants' cataclysmically-awful offensive this year, only to watch the ensuring carnage around here.

Actually, no I don't.
