OT: Bob Brenly goes from working with Len Kasper and his knowledge of the game to Dick Stockton, who should have retired ten years and several thousand mispronounced names ago.

So Dick Stockton has done announcing for NBA, NFL, and MLB games....and knows jack about any of them.

Chip was much better as a studio host. He has no business in a broadcast booth.

Stockton is the classic Musburger-type, a "legend" who parachutes into a sport with nothing but an ego and a briefing book. He comes across as clueless not because he is elderly but because he doesn't watch the games.

TBS puts together a very competent broadcast, and they should - they've been a baseball broadcast outlet longer than anyone outside of WGN. I just don't understand why they can't corral better on-air talent.

They actually had good talent when they carried the Braves. Since they dumped the Braves, their on-air talent has gone down the crapper.

Len Kasper, Duane Kiper and Jon Sciambi would all be excellent choices IMO. Marty Brennamen and Vin Sculley did fantastic work on national telecasts back in the day, though I'm unsure as to the willingness of either to do this kind of work today.

I think TBS' biggest problem is likely that many of the best broadcasters are under contract to ESPN, FOX, or are on local NFL assignments at this time of year.

Vasgersian and Costas, both at MLB, are IMO the two best broadcasters with no game work in October. A shame.

I appreciate Len 10x more after getting a reminder of the Chip days. There is definitely a nostalgic factor there, but once you get past that, he is quite terrible.

This.

He's terrible.

He hung up on a local sports radio talk show this afternoon. He was talking about his kids (think he has 4), and one of the "hosts" of the show jokingly asked if he was staying busy in the off-seasons.

I don't understand how network execs hire their announcers.

I was thinking during yesterday's Yankees-Twins game if the people who hire these announcers really like or understand sports and know what a good announcer entails.

I was walking a Sunday baseball game on TBS earlier this year and I realized how bad Chip was. Back when he was with the Cubs, I was younger and didn't know as much, so I didn't mind him.

Would it really be that difficult to just alternate home team regular season announcers?

This is how it was done up through 1976.

Imagine Mike Shannon and Suzyn Waldman on a national telecast. Oh, the horrors.

depends on what kind of contracts the local announcers have signed with their local affiliates.

beyond that, there's this ridiculous thing that NATIONAL broadcasts need NATIONAL announcers. TBS would probably think they were slumming to use the Fox Sports Midwest crew for their broadcasts.

But it's not limited to baseball; NFL broadcasts are just as bad

Well there aren't local TV crews at all for the NFL, so thats not really an avenue that can be pursued.

True, but they over value people like Joe Buck and under value people like Gus Johnson

Gus should broadcast baseball games too.

Gus is fantastic.

He's a love or hate kind of broadcaster. I personally hate him, but that's just because he sucks.

Actually I'm sort of indifferent to him, but I hate all the over the top praise the guy gets for screaming.

In the Twins-Yankees game, the crew missed a moment to help Caray. In the sixth inning, Michael Cuddyer lined a C. C. Sabathia pitch to Derek Jeter. “Smoked,” Caray declared, exaggerating the impact with one of his favorite and most overused verbs.

After catching the ball, Jeter gestured to second baseman Robinson Cano, using a knuckleball grip, that the ball had done something weird and knuckly; you could read his lips saying, “Watch this,” as he directed Cano to watch the stadium replay. Had the truck’s denizens been more observant, they could have told Caray and Darling to illuminate the exchange with relevant replays

Instead, TBS replayed the Yankee dugout’s reaction to Hideki Matsui’s home run.

This was about the only part of the game I watched and I thought it was really weird how they obviously missed Jeter telling Cano to "watch this" on the jumbotron. Why they decided to show dugout reaction to a HR from much earlier makes no sense.
