At times, Pittsburgh dominated -- particularly in the second period. The Hawks looked a little tired, but they played very, very solid in the third and were very unlucky not to have scored a couple more goals (as was Pittsburgh).

The Penguins players/media were certainly giving the Blackhawks a good deal of respect, considering they're the champs and we're the up and comer.

Players:

"It was a big game for both teams to prove themselves," Staal said. "Coming into this game, we wanted to prove we could play with this team. We've heard a lot about them, and wanted to show them our best."

"I think their coach was using that game as a measuring stick, seeing as how we won last year and they were close to being in the finals," Cooke said. "Anytime you do that and there are hits thrown early in the game, it becomes intense."

Post-Gazette:

The Penguins and Blackhawks rank among the elite clubs in their respective conferences, and both played with an intensity well beyond that generally found in a non-conference game in early December.

Naturally, they would have preferred two [points], if only to establish an edge in case they run into the Blackhawks again this season. Which can only happen, of course, in the Stanley Cup final.

Just watched the highlights. Man I love On The Fly.

Just based on that, Malkin is a goon, Keith's hit on Cooke was questionable, and this game appeared to have a playoff-like intensity. Can't believe I didn't record it.

Keith got the shoulder, but given Cooke's actions this game is was entirely justified (to me). He probably deserved a charging call, but Cooke sucker punched him. Malkin really is a goon, along with several other Penguins. They did a *lot* of interfering that wasn't called and a lot of questionable hitting. Frankly, Malkin should be suspended for repeatedly cross-checking Fraser when he was on the ice. I am reminded of why all my Eastern Conference Hockey fans are united in one thing: HATRED for the Penguins (Caps, Rangers, Habs, Leafs, Bruins, Flyers, Panthers and Canes).

Absolutely. The highlights only showed about a second before they went to the ice, but it didn't look like Fraser did anything to deserve repeated cross-checks to the face.

I do have a related concern about this team. They can play their high-flying offensive style all season, but they need to be able to play the physical hockey come playoff time. Seems like last year's team (albeit the same guys) was more physical and didn't take any crap. I hope this team can flip that switch at the end of the year.

Also, glad to see Kopecky was scratched last night. He deserved it.

The Hawks have too many off days. They've played one of the fewest games in the NHL and they randomly have 3 off days in a row right now. I feel like I can't get in a rhythm watching Hawks games because they've been so infrequent.

I just noticed that. I swear they were just waiting for me to leave town again. Crock. :banghead:

Bulls too. They played Toronto last night, who had played 4 more games than Chicago heading into the game

They had likely played 4 more games after the game as well. :D)

I thought this game was a good reminder for the Hawks, physically. They weren't particularly intimidated, but rather than play to that style, they stayed disciplined and played smart hockey. It was good coaching. Only Fleury standing on his head a couple of times kept it close. Probably the best game by goalies, all in all, I've seen this season.

If your counting games that they didn't show up, it's more like 8 more games than the Bulls.

Looking forward to tonight's game... one of the guys who works for me is a HUGE Rangers fan, and we've been having a good time taunting each other. Just win!!

Another one of the staff is a Red Wings fan, so I felt spending five minutes to paint this would be well worth it.

Cool, this one is on Comcast so I can watch. Nice to have some Hawks on a cold snowy night. Especially when the Bulls are stinking it up.
