My guess would be:

-Doesn't have enough money to keep the team competitive (you think he can afford a payroll bigger than 130m?...you think he can afford a payroll AT 130m?)

-Any attempts to raise revenue are radical and met with extreme anger from fan base.

-Umm...I'm not sure why else.

I have a feeling the Ricketts will be trying to unload the Cubs in 5-6 years. Just a feeling...

Is that the cynical Cub fan in you making an appearance?

And I see the media somehow got wind of this "random act of kindness". Seems like they never report when Joe Average commits a "random act of kindness". Strange.

There's always somebody that has to turn it into a negative.

Do people really believe the Tribune poured money into the Cubs from other businesses? This post makes no sense

Edit: Unless you're worried about some sort of debt constraints from the deal

It's the old news line, "If it bleeds, it leads!"

Unfortunately, it true in many cases.

well i'm never paying for a cubs ticket again... just gonna wander around outside wrigley until i bump into a member of the ricketts family and then get awesome seats for free.

I tried that at Lowes and home depot hoping to run into the "Yard crasher" TV show guy and it never happens, but considering there are more Ricketts you may have better odds

I don't believe it. Not the part that Joe Ricketts gave them free tickets. I don't believe there really was a family willing to watch this crap this year.

Its funny because if this was Tony Romo people would be bitching that he was just doing it for the publicity.
