If only Hendry had the stones to do something like this...

Do what? Something stupid? Not like the Dodgers gave up anything of value, but there'd be no point to this. Nevermind that Thome supposedly only wanted to go to a team that had a sure chance of playoffs.

I read that as having the stones to drop worthless vets down the stretch.

Yeah...that makes a lot more sense.

Really Heilman's my only complaint, unless there was actually a taker for Dempster or Gregg, which I doubt at this point of the year.

Yeah, and I can see the justification for holding onto Heilman if the other team was literally offering nothing and you just wanted to save face in negotiations by showing you were willing from walking away from the table. Personally I'd have let him go for nothing, as he's fairly worthless, but he's not such a anchor that you'd have to jump at the first chance of dumping him.

2004 Sosa wishes Hendry saw things your way.

I can only imagine the posters loving a move like this from Hendry. Trading Thome for next to nothing when he's going to be a type A free agent. Brilliant move by Williams. =D>

thome is making $13M this year and basically can only DH. if they'd offered him arbitration, the white sox would have been obligated to offer him at least $10.92M, since arbitration rules dictate that a team's offer must be at least 80% of his most recent year's salary, or 70% of his salary from 2 years ago. do you really think the white sox, or thome's new team (dodgers), are going to offer him about $11M a year when he's going to be 39 years old, he's had some injury problems, can't play the field and his production has declined pretty significantly?

Thome in the NL, most likely will not be a Type A. Hell in the NL there is a good chance Thome isnt ranked as a Type B either.

Yes, but 4 days ago, WIlliams had a type A free agent as an asset. Now he doesn't.

What he is now is not relavent at all.

It's not an asset if you have no chance of converting that status into draft picks.

The White Sox will not offer him arbitration. It wouldn't matter if he was type A or not.

I still think that if Hendry had done this, the Hendry bashers would have jumped all over it. I can only imagine the length of the thread about trading your middle-of-the-order guy for next to nothing while your team is only 6 games out with a month to play.

the white sox chance at making the playoffs is like 5% at best. might as well dump your assets and get something for them. plus we're not idiots; we get mad if someone like harden is non-tendered because he's clearly worth $5M and we wouldn't get mad if we had jim thome and non-tendered him rather than guarantee him $11M for one year.

You have posted often enough to know that some posters will find fault with anything that Hendry does or doesn't do. This disappointing season has enough blame to share, but some people can't get past Hendry. Look at how many posts basically say we would be in the World Series if only Hendry didn't trade DeRosa and sign Miles. While we can all agree that wasn't a great decision, the problems on this team go much deeper than that. As I've pointed out before, Hendry's job sure looks easy on this side of a keyboard and with the benefit of hindsight. Give Hendry his fair share of the blame, but don't forget Soto, Marmol, Fontenot, Soriano, Bradley, Miles, Gregg, Zambrano, injuries, and Piniella when spreading the blame.

I agree, I just didn't know where Keener was going with the NL talk with relation to the previous post.

can we hear more about the challenges of playing first base in a 40 and over sunday league and how they are similar to those faced by jim thome in major league baseball

'I just want to be honest with you. I'd love to come. I want to help you guys any way I can. But playing first base is not something I'm going to be able to do -- maybe in an emergency situation, perhaps.'

Without knowing all the facts.. why can't he? I play in an adult county league and there are some 40+ year old, broken down men with far less conditioning than Thome gets that can field the position adequetly. Is he really that lazy?

Because you play in an adult county league and he plays in major league baseball.
