Wow, White Sox werent folling around. I thought Kenny was just calling them out. Contreres in Coors Field should be a match made in hell, but then again, thats what we thought about Marquis. As for Thome, I hope he enjoys that 1 at bat per game.

Have to respect the move on both sides. The Sox didn't believe they could get it done, so they started looking to next year. The Dodgers are really serious about winning it all this year. Hopefully they match up against the Cardinals, I need a likable team to root for.

'I just want to be honest with you. I'd love to come. I want to help you guys any way I can. But playing first base is not something I'm going to be able to do -- maybe in an emergency situation, perhaps.'

Without knowing all the facts.. why can't he? I play in an adult county league and there are some 40+ year old, broken down men with far less conditioning than Thome gets that can field the position adequetly. Is he really that lazy?

I really hope Thome gets a ring. One of my favorite non-Cubs.

If he's not wearing a Cubs uniform when he gets it I could care less.

Because you play in an adult county league and he plays in major league baseball.

Are you saying it's not comparable?

...which is actually the opposite of the thinking I was going with there.

If only Hendry had the stones to do something like this...

What he said.

What is the harm really? We're out of it...Kenny gets some salary relief and maybe some pieces for the future...its a good deal for them.

Remember, this is the AL Central were talkning about.

Fielding adequately for a rec league and fielding adequately at the major league level are two completely different things. Furthermore, the grind of a 162-game season takes more of a toll than playing a couple times per week. On top of that, the guy has back issues.

I'd be very curious to see your definition of adequate fielding at first base. I play in an 18 and over wood bat league, and there are some guys in their 20s and 30s who can't play first base adequately. They'll catch it if you throw it right at them, but scooping throws in the dirt and ranging to either side for anything is a struggle for some of these guys. Broken down 40-year old men with less conditioning than Thome are probably not fielding the position very well. They're put there because they won't hurt the team as much as they would at any other position.

Do what? Something stupid? Not like the Dodgers gave up anything of value, but there'd be no point to this. Nevermind that Thome supposedly only wanted to go to a team that had a sure chance of playoffs.

I read that as having the stones to drop worthless vets down the stretch.

Yeah...that makes a lot more sense.

Really Heilman's my only complaint, unless there was actually a taker for Dempster or Gregg, which I doubt at this point of the year.

Remember Thome is a free agent after this year with 2.5 mil remaining in this years salary, and then there off the hook next year. We dont have any vets like that who we can just dump and not have to worry about their future salary, not any that any other team would want. Sure, Id be all for dumping Gregg, Heilman, and of course Miles, but theres really not much of a market for bad players.

Coletti confirmed that Thome wouldn't be taking playing time away from Loney at first. Pretty big of Thome to accept a bench role, but this might be his last chance at a ring

It feels like bigger "names" were moved at the Aug. 31 deadline than the July 31 deadline
