Said it before and I’ll say it again: Derek Jeter’s the best baseball player of my lifetime.

No truth to the rumor that Albert Pujols is sitting out the rest of the week due to depression.

I"m guilty as anyone about reading his MMQB article every Monday. He is usually an entertaining read, but wow he's off the wall about some stuff. He is a big time Red Sox/East Coast homer, so take baseball knowledge thru those lens.

peter king lived during much of mickey mantle and willie mays' playing careers, and the entire careers of albert pujols, barry bonds, hank aaron, manny ramirez, mike schmidt, alex rodriguez, joe morgan, greg maddux, sandy koufax, bob gibson, roger clemens, pedro martinez and mariano rivera. i wish he were joking.

From his twitter:

SI_PeterKing: @hometimrunner : Jeter overrated. Right. Soon he'll have more hits than Gehrig, Ruth, DiMaggio. Hitting .330 on mlb's top team. What a bum.

SI_PeterKing: @twofatfeet : Mea culpa, sort of. I should have said "my adult lifetime.'' And yes, as of now, I'd have Jeter ahead of Pujols.

Said it before and I'll say it again:

Derek Jeter is not the best baseball player in King's life time (innumerable, but let's just start with Mays, Aaron, Mantle).

Derek Jeter is not the best baseball player in King's adult life time (let's say since the 70's...Morgan, Schmidt, Yount, Brett, Ripken).

Derek Jeter is not the best baseball player among current players (Pujols, Hanley Ramirez, Utley, Fielder, Dunn).

Derek Jeter is not the best baseball player among current AL players (Mauer, Morneau, Cabrera).

Derek Jeter is not the best baseball player in his division (Youkilis, Bay, Crawford).

Derek Jeter is not the best baseball player on his team (Teixeira, Rodriguez).

Derek Jeter is not the best candidate for SS on his team (Rodriguez).

Now, it could be argued that he's currently the best SS in his division, but Bartlett and Scutaro are right there with him this year.

By that rationale, Jake Beckley is better than Rogers Hornsby, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ted Williams, Jimmie Foxx....

What a moron.

I don't hate Jeter, because there's nothing really to hate. But I get so tired of crap like this.

Posted
yeah jeter has actually been a really good player for a long time. people end up hating him because of dolts like peter king and every person who points to his rings, leadership, flip to get jeremy giambi and header into the stands and decide that he's the greatest player they've ever seen.

WOW Peter King is an idiot. How can a serious baseball guy say this?

He's a football guy.

I wonder if this qualifies for FJM.

Kissing Suzy Kolber rips him to shreds every week. It's not as good as FJM, but it has its moments.

Also, I love this video of Peter King at the Red Sox game. I think those shorts can be used as a 6 person tent.

First of all, how in the world did you find that video?

Second of all, Red Sox fan + Derek Jeter man love = DOES NOT COMPUTE!

Jeter's comparisons are to some pretty good players (Sandberg, Pudge) but Pujols comparisons are to legends. I think it's clear who will be better by career's end

• YES I WOULD. From no less than 500 of you via e-mail: "So you'd take Derek Jeter over Albert Pujols? You'd be the only one.''

Never thought a baseball opinion would generate so much froth. What I should have said is Derek Jeter is the best player of my adult lifetime. Say, 1975 and beyond. And I stand behind that.

It could be that Pujols will overtake him in a few years; I don't know. But Pujols is in his ninth year, Jeter in his 15th. Let's see how Albert stands the test of time. This, by the way, is not just about stats. It's about leadership, playing under the great New York microscope and consistently delivering at a championship level, and playing doggedly well, whether the game is vital or a blowout. He's everything a baseball player should be.

Hey, if you don't agree, that's fine; it's certainly not an open-and-shut case. I love Pujols, and I've loved Mike Schmidt, Cal Ripken, Greg Maddux and many others; Johnny Bench would be awfully close to Jeter. I just value a lot of the qualities and things Jeter brings to the game other than fielding and hitting.

Jeter hasn't been in a World Series since 2001 (and hasn't won since 2000), while Pujols has been in two and won one in the past 9 seasons. Using Jeter's "championship success" is pretty flimsy right now, though the Yankees look like a good bet to get back to the WS this year

Fixed.

Actually Albert is fine, it's the 500 people who emailed this joker who are laughing their asses off at him.

As a guy who has been surrounded by football his entire life, I completely expect him to think that way about baseball. As you say, it's not surprising in the least that he'd pull that card.
