Man, I'm shocked at the outcome of today's game. I though Gabbert would have the jitters and I thought Illinois' offense would light up the scoreboard. I had no idea what to expect scheme-wise with two new coordinators.

I loved what I saw from the defense today. D-Line was a little suspect at times, but I think that had a lot to do with Juice's speed. LB's were fast as hell, DB's looked very very good.

As for offense I thought the line was solid. I would've liked to see a better performance out of the RBs. WRs had some dropped balls, but as a whole were impressive. A full, healthy year from Danario Alexander would be huge for this team. Gabbert has a [expletive] cannon and can run too. I can't wait to see what he turns into.

All in all, a great opener. Mizzou shouldn't have much of a problem with their next two games before a big road trip against Nevada. I was pretty confident about that game before (well, moreso than a lot of people I've talked to), and today did nothing to change that.

P.S. RIP IMB

EDIT: Also, Duke lost to 1-AA Richmond. This comes after the highest preseason expectations for Duke in at least 10 years. Sweet.

I couldn't watch the game. How good is Richmond? How did Duke look?

I didn't see the game, but Richmond is a 1-AA National Championship contender.

yeah richmond and app st are the top two teams in the i-aa rankings. pretty good start for the highly-regarded i-aa teams - app st was close with east carolina, villanova beat temple, richmond beat duke, northern iowa almost beat iowa. william & mary (ranked #14 in i-aa) beat virginia, who apparently sucks.

Preliminary report on Bradford: sprained AC joint.

Not season ending, but could be 2-4 weeks they say.

so he's going to miss part of the season and their chances of winning a title are almost gone. wonder if he's wishing he'd gone pro.

Probably not, as he would be on the Lions.

i'm sure he will end up going to a great team after this season.

Yeah but would you rather goto the Chiefs, or the LIONS? It's the fricken Lions

either notre dame is better than people think or nevada isn't that good this year.

congrats to k-state on their 4 point win over vaunted umass.

See? No one is bitching about how bad the Big 12 is. Kstate barely beats a D-1AA team, and OU loses to a less talented (but pretty decent) BYU team, albeit without their heisman QB.

But if the Big 10 does those things its, "LOL THE BIG TEN SUXXX! WORST BCS CONFERENCE"

That's because the Big Ten is terrible.

It's not the worst BCS conference though. I saw people suggesting that they should be stripped of being a BCS conference. Most conferences had close calls/lost to inferior schools today. The Big 10 is what it is, and today's results shouldn't have revealed anything about the conference.

Our O-Line looked like they were giving Lewis a fair amount of time to pass, but the running game was awful. Boyette led the team with 15 yards on 9 carries. It looks like we are going to lean heavy towards the pass this year. Thaddeus Lewis continues to be a great QB and the best one at Duke for awhile. He went 34/55 for 350 yards, 2 TD's and no INT's. Johnny Williams stepped up today and looks to be tapping into his potential (115 yards and a TD). We had a lot more yards than they did, but they had that blocked punt for a TD.

Who in their right mind actually suggested that? I think you might be taking emphatic exaggeration a little too seriously. But yeah, the Big Ten is wildly overrated.

Well obviously the Big East is the worst BCS conference, but that goes without saying.

if by "overrated" you mean "everyone thinks they suck", then yeah, I agree

Appalachian State may have been able to beat ECU, if they had their starting QB. Armanti Edwards was the 1-AA player of the year in 2008 and he is the one that led them to the win over Michigan. However, he got hurt in a lawnmowing accident and was questionable, but he didn't play.

yeah that's idiotic. the perception of the big ten has been hurt by ohio state's continued flops in big games and a lack of top 10-caliber teams. there have been a number of years when the conference is fairly deep, but people say it sucks.

does va tech ever finish ranked higher than they begin the year?

Ha! That's a good question. Anyone care to look up the last time they finished higher in the final poll than the preseason poll?

I know you're somewhat joking, but I was curious.

They've actually been ranked really well the last few years:

From the AP poll

2005

preseason-8th, Final-7th

2006

preseason-17th, Final-19th

2007

preseason-9th, Final-9th

2008

preseason-17th, Final-15th

i'm surprised. maybe they work their way higher and then lay some eggs in october/november before doing well in a bowl game or something. just seems like they're overrated a lot.

they're getting thoroughly outplayed in this game, but as usual their special teams have kept them in it.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw they were rated 7th earlier in the week. Just seems like they always start out really highly ranked, lose a key game or two in conference play before finishing strong.

Fresno up 35-0 at the half. This is a slaughter.

UCD can't run the ball one bit and have allowed a 60 yard TD run, a 92 yard TD pass and a 95 yard pick for a touchdown.
