Robb Nen in 2002 was Dusty's crowning achievement, imo. With Prior, you can argue that his career actually came to a screeching halt thanks to his collision with the midget 2B and taking a screaming liner off his pitching arm, rather than high pitch counts. With Wood, you can argue the abuse he suffered through HS was what hurt his career the most.

But Nen? It was so abundantly clear the guy was injured. He had nothing left in the tank, but Dusty kept trotting him out there night after night, even in the playoffs to the point where Nen was throwing batting practice in the World Series. Nen's admitted that he basically knew he was jeopardizing his career pitching in his condition. Yet, Dusty didn't know, didn't care, or looked the other way.

Which is why the manager has to be the sane one. No way can a guy in Nen's spot say, "sorry skip, I can't go today." Could you imagine if he did that in the World Series? He would be hammered in the media and press.

And this, I can see as a real legit point against Baker. He's a 'player's manager'. I'd bet 5 dollars versus a hole in a donut that Harang told him last night he was good to face Lee. Dusty, being on the side of his player, would say go get 'em.

You are exactly right- managers have to protect these guys and protect the franchise- doing so means sometimes giving more weight to the importance of that than of winning today's game. (or making the player happy at the time)

Coincidence!! No correlation to pitch counts!!

In this case, it probably is. I really don't see anything too awful about Cueto's workload the last two years. Certainly not in Prior territory.

Just out of curiosity, is there anybody here that lives in Cincinnati and can tell me what the general feeling regarding Baker is? Do Reds fans hate him yet?

I saw a bit of the SF-Reds game the other day (the 2-1 Howry-being-Howry walkoff game) and there were only a few thousand folks at the park. I don't think most Cincy fans are even paying attention at this stage.

Cueto's PAP numbers aren't alarming either. The guy went 7+ innings every start for weeks earlier in the year because he was so good and he still didn't have ugly pitch counts.

I'm south of Cinci, but it's Reds territory and they're more fed up with Taveras at the top of the batting order (or even on the team) than his handling of the pitching staff. They are fed up, though- those I hear from.

High pitch counts in younger pitchers are *correlated* with injuries.

I think it's pretty hilarious they suck harder than a Pirates team filled with AAA players
