Cubs Eyeing Teahen, Hermida

By Tim Dierkes [July 30 at 9:02am CST]

The Cubs are looking for a left-handed hitter who can play right field, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. While they're not optimistic about a deal, the plan would be to create a platoon with the disappointing Milton Bradley. Wittenmyer says the Cubs have about $2-3MM of payroll room to work with.

Two players on the radar: Mark Teahen of the Royals and Jeremy Hermida of the Marlins. The Royals are looking for a center fielder in return, however. Teahen has $1.37MM left on his contract. Hermida has $847K remaining. Both players can be under team control through 2011. Either player would still leave some wiggle room for the Cubs to acquire a left-handed reliever.

Ill take either for cheap. Note to Jim and Lou: WE DONT NEED A LOOGY WHO MAY OR MAY NOT BE BETTER THAN RYAN OR GAUB

From what I hear, the Royals want a CF and the Marlins want bullpen help. Laugh all you want, but I wonder if Sam Fuld is someone we could base a deal for Teahen around. Its not like they're going to land Grady Sizemore for the guy. Offer Sam Fuld+2 prospect/PTBNL.

Uh, I know Bradley's been disappointing, but wasting resources to acquire a platoon partner would be downright stupid. I'm all for getting Teahen to play second and give Bradley, Aramis, or whoever some days off, but not as a strict platoon partner.

I agree. Teahen would be as close to a replacement DeRosa as we could get.

yeah, i think i'd actually prefer Bradley in RF vs. RHP than either of those guys. especially once considering that we'd have to actually give up something to get either one of them.

at least Teahen can play 3B/1B and possibly some 2B which makes him more appealing than Hermida, i guess.

i really don't Sam Fuld is worth...anything really.

also, that leaves the Cubs without a backup CF

Today's Tribune mentions Cody Ross as a possible RH OF who can play CF. Put Ross in CF and use Fukudome to spell Bradley.

Hey, somebody found a worse idea than trading for Teahen.

Bradley in 2009 as a lefty: .209/.376/.343/.719

Hermida in 2009 vs righties: .274/.362/.411/.773

60 points in overall OPS. 10 points less OBP and 70 points more SLG. UZR grades them similarly this season defensively.

I see the thinking behind this and don't necessarily disagree. I wouldn't give that much for Hermida, though. Could something be worked around a Heilman for Hermida base if they want a reliever?

If Ross came cheap enough, a .925 OPS against lefties isn't bad at all. There would be a roster crunch when Reed returned, but he'll be back close to roster expansion, which would make it a non-issue.

The last thing the Cubs need at this point is another Reed Johnson. Fukudome slugs less against lefties, but his OBP is comparable to career averages. Fukudome is what he is, an above average defensive OF that gets on base at a good rate. Very similar to Bradley at this point. Fukudome and Bradley don't need to be replaced for the team to succeed, they need to be at the top of the order instead of guys like Johnson and Theriot.

If we really want a backup CF, bring up So Taguchi. He cant be any worse than most people project Sam Fuld to be anyway.

Career vs. RHP:

Bradley: 266/364/430/794

Hermida: 272/349/441/790

Ross has a better career OBP vs lefties than Kosuke (.355 for Ross and .351 for Kosuke) and he slugs 260 points better. It's certainly not pressing and I wouldn't give what Ross is likely to cost, but it's not a bad idea to make a significant upgrade against lefties and improve the bench depth.

Both have been below those career numbers this season. If Bradley can produce at a .794 clip in the second half against righties, then great. But he's shown no power at all this season.

On hitting alone I'd take Ross over Teahen or Hermida, but if Teahen is the only guy of the three who we can play at second then he obviously makes the most sense.

i'm sure bradley would take this platooning very well and not let it effect his play or demeanor at all.

I love 10m platoon guys. In fact, I hope we can get a bookend 10m to take the other half of the at bats. That would be a 20m platoon. How awesome would that be?
