I'm not sure I'd want Gorzelanny on a AAA team.

Grabow is bad. He covers it with a decent ERA, but he walks way to many guys.

Gorz seemed to be unlucky this yr with the Pirates. A 5.19 era, yet a 1.15whip and a .194 BAA. At AAA Gorz was 2.48 era with a 1.18 whip and a .228 BAA. So it seems Gorz was a bit unlucky in his stint with the Pirates earlier in the season.

it's just a bad appropriation of resources to pay a closer 8-10 million dollars.

Sure, it's not ideal. But high payroll teams can easily get away with it and succeed.

Not with the Cubs' circumstances at the time. When the team isn't being sold, yes, though even then it wouldn't be smart. That's some really expensive sentiment.

Your logic has no effect on the might gooney/erik316stone tagteam.

There's no logic in defending not offering arbitration. It was a stupid move.

There's plenty (cost, health history), you're just refusing to see it.

It was stupid to not offer arbitration. Pretending otherwise is ridiculous. It was a very small chance he would accept, when he was looking for, and got a longterm contract. Had he accepted, they could have easiliy afforded it. You don't waste money on Miles and Gregg.

Gregg has been better than Wood this year and we could not have afforded it

According to mlbtr Cubs get Grabow, no word on for who. And I never would have guessed Grabow is ranked as a Type A free agent

So no one will sign him this offseason, a la Juan Cruz.

I'm refusing to be an idiot and assume he would have taken it. Arbitration is 1 year. It would not have crippled this team by any stretch of the imagination.

What if it cost us Miles and Gathright? What then?

Why can't you people tell the difference between offering arbitration and insisting on bringing him back.

I said all along it was the smart thing to do to let somebody else sign him even if I personally wanted him back. But it was stupid to not offer arbitration.

We'd have a very bad reliever on our team making $8+M right now?

He's not very bad, but Wood cost a hell of a lot more than Miles and Gathright did this season.

Nobody said it would have crippled them. Stop being so melodramatic. It makes a ton of sense why they didn't chance an offer. It was by no means a make or break move either way. And you never refuse to be an idiot.

He's been very bad... Fair enough, though, as that doesn't mean he is very bad.

Since we're talking probabilities... what is the chance that those supplemental picks would have amounted to anything worth a damn? That certainly comes into play in the risk vs. reward conversation.
