Let Fox Catch

I know this doesnt need its own thread, but it now has one.

He did just fine for himself. Much like at 3rd, hes far from gracefull, but he gets the job done. Had we not gone messing around with the likes of Ryan Freel, Aaron Miles, and Bobby Scales when Aramis was out and put Fox at 3rd, we might have won some of those close games.

If Fontenot or Baker were more competant with the bat, we could live with Koyie Hill as an 8 hitter, but since we dont, we have Fox, and thats a nice bat to have everyday.

He did not do just fine for himself. He dropped like 5 pitches. If Cecil Cooper wasn't a blithering idiot, Bourn would've stole 2nd and 3rd in the 13th.

All that said, Koyie Hill is making me die a little inside with each game, so I don't even know.

As bad as Hill is at the plate he's essential right now based on the position he plays. Letting Fox catch until Soto comes back is a desperation move which the Cubs don't need to do.

The problem isn't Hill catching, it's Hendry/Lou not promoting a backup catcher, thus forcing Fox out of most games

This is true.

It's not that they need a new backup catcher, it's that Lou has to be willing to let Fox pinch hit and trust that Koyie Hill won't get run over by a car at some point during the game.

Yea Im more pissed at the piss poor roster management of this team than I am that Lou wont start Fox at catcher. Early on in the year we were always playing a man down, because they wouldnt DL someone, and now because they wont call up or get another catcher, we arent allowed(because our manager is to scared) to use Fox as a PH in a close game. Its asinine.

The problem with Koyie isnt Koyie, its Fontenot and Baker. If we has a more adequate bat between the 2, we could live with Koyie Hill in the everyday lineup until Soto returns, but we need another bat down there or else the 7-9 spots in the lineup are a black hole. We dont have a bat to replace Font or Baker, but we have one to replace Hill.

I don't get why we don't have a back-up catcher here either. Just send Blanco down or something.

EDIT: Nevermind - does Baker have options? I would guess not. We should just go with 11 picthers.

Hoffpauirs the one who should be sent down. I know, hes our lefty power that gets ahold of 1 once in a blue moon between awkword looking strikeouts, but he has options and other than being lefty, he serves the same purpose as Fox, maybe a bit better defensively but a lot worse offensively. The problem is, who is this mythical replacement catcher who can hit? I guess we could bring up Robinson and hope for lightening in a bottle until Soto returns, but his AAA numbers dont look like theyd traslate into big league succes. I guess we could just trade for Greg Zaun or something of the like.

dude, i don't mean to be a jerk, but didn't you want Hoffpauir starting over Derrek Lee like six weeks ago?

i don't think Fox should be catching regularly. a few innings here or there or maye a start is okay.

i'm fine with fox catching. that's how bad of a hitter koyie hill is.

Agreed. Let him catch until he gives you overwhelming reasons why he shouldn't.

He already has.

I missed the last innings last night. Was he that bad?

Just for an example, the very first batter he had to throw the batter out at first after a strikeout that he dropped. The pitch was in the strike zone and was actually a called strike 3.

Yes. He dropped multiple balls and generally seems very awkward back there and we already know guys can almost run at will on him. That's not the kind of player you want in such a vital position for 9 innings.

no he hasn't. i'm not saying start him every day, but he could catch the day game after a night game and i'd be fine with it.

Fortunately today is a night game after a night game so he'll stay banished from behind the plate.

He's essentially the walking definition of an emergency catcher. There simply isn't the need right now to make such a desperate move.

if cecil cooper isn't going to let the NL's leading basestealer steal in the 13th inning of a 1-1 game, i think it's safe to say he wouldn't be sending people willy nilly all game long against fox.
